The Do-Over by Jennifer Honeybourn
Hardcover, 211 pages
Published July 14th 2020 by Swoon Reads

A teenage girl gets the chance to redo her past in this smart and charming YA novel by the author of When Life Gives You Demons.

Emilia has always wanted to fit in with the A crowd. So, when Ben, the hottest guy in school, asks her out, she chooses him over Alistair, her best friend—even after he confesses his feelings to her.

Six months later, Emilia wonders how her life would have been different if she'd chosen Alistair instead. Haunted by her mistake, she finds a magical solution that promises to rectify the past. As a result, everything in her life is different. What happens if her second chance is her only chance to make things right?

The Do-Over is a book that I could see myself liking or hating, depending on my mood. Luckily, the mood I was in allowed me to like it.

The Do-Over is a very quick read. Since I was in the mood for something short and sweet, this was okay with me. However, I could see the length being an issue for some people, because the story and character development do suffer a bit.

Was it original? Well, no. The "do-over" story has been done about a billion times, of course. I mean, it's right there in the name, so I don't think this book is trying to be something it's not. It's a short and quirky teen rom-com, and if you're in the mood for that kind of thing, it does the trick!

The Game Can't Love You Back by Karole Cozzo
Genre: Young Adult

Eve is used to being the odd woman out. As the only girl on her school's baseball team, she knows exactly how to put sweaty, macho baseball players in their place, and she's focused on one thing and one thing only—being the best pitcher she can be.

But when a freak accident forces her high school to be absorbed by the neighboring town, Eve has to contend with a new group of guys who aren't used to having a woman on their team. And the new team's star pitcher, Jamie, has no interest in being ousted from his throne. He can't afford to give up his starting slot to a new pitcher—even worse, to a girl.

As the competition between Jamie and Eve starts to heat up, so does their attraction to each other. Can they keep their heads in the game, or will they end up getting played?

I love sports. Okay, that’s not true. I love football, I could do without the other sports. BUT. I love the love for sports, and I love reading about characters who love sports, and I love reading books where the author knows what they’re writing about. Nothing irks me more than a “sports romance” where the sport is a plot device and the author clearly knows nothing about the sport. Irks. IRKS. So, I’m happy to say that in The Game Can’t Love You Back, the characters’ love for baseball felt genuine.

I devoured this book. I’m not going to say it absolutely blew me away, but it was adorable and I was hooked from Eve and Jamie’s first encounter. Their chemistry and banter was so much fun.

I do think there was a missed opportunity for a bit more depth, specifically with Jamie’s home life. But, if it’s not that kind of book then it’s not that kind of book, and that’s okay.

If you’re in the mood for a quick and cute contemporary read, this one is for you!

Review: Kissing Max Holden by Katy Upperman

Kissing Max Holden by Katy Upperman
Young Adult, Contemporary Romance
Hardcover, 304 pages
Publication: August 1st, 2017 by Swoon Reads

Kissing Max Holden was a terrible idea...
After his father has a life-altering stroke, Max Holden isn't himself. As his long-time friend, Jillian Eldridge only wants to help him, but she doesn't know how. When Max climbs through her window one night, Jill knows that she shouldn't let him kiss her. But she can't resist, and when they're caught in the act by her dad, Jill swears it'll never happen again. Because kissing Max Holden is a terrible idea.
With a new baby sibling on the way, her parents fighting all the time, and her dream of culinary school up in the air, Jill starts spending more and more time with Max. And even though her father disapproves and Max still has a girlfriend, not kissing Max is easier said than done. Will Jill follow her heart and allow their friendship to blossom into something more, or will she listen to her head and stop kissing Max Holden once and for all?

I want to be with you, now and next year and after, for as long as we’re happy.

So, I have to admit…I was unfair to this book. I let it sit on my shelf for several weeks because I looked at the cover and the title and just thought, “I don’t want to read fluff right now.” That’s what I thought this book would be. Pure fluff. This is not to say there’s anything wrong with fluff – it has its place. But I assumed this book would lack depth and I was wrong.

Kissing Max Holden was absolutely adorable, but also sad and just flat out real. The characters are so raw and real that I felt like I knew them personally. In fact, I felt like they were plucked right out of my teenage years. They are not perfect, but they are good people who are in pain. Everything from the emotions and struggles of the characters to their language is absolutely on point.

The one issue I had with this book – and to be honest it might be what keeps it from getting a higher rating from me – is the vilification of Max’s girlfriend. It comes from all angles – Jillian, all of their friends, and sometimes Max himself. She is never given a single redeeming quality, and the way she is blamed for everything got very, very frustrating. Classic “girlfriend/boyfriend is absolutely terrible so that absolves us for cheating” trope. The author does bring it full circle in a few moments of self-awareness for each of the main characters, but I still wish it had been addressed a bit more.

Kissing Max Holden is an endearing story with raw and realistic characters that you will grow to love. This book isn’t even out yet but I need Upperman’s next book like, yesterday.

Review: Amid Stars and Darkness by Chani Lynn Feener

Amid Stars and Darkness by Chani Lynn Feener
Paperback, 375 pages
Publication: July 18th, 2017 by Swoon Reads

If anyone had ever asked Delaney Grace what her plans were after high school, she certainly wouldn't have answered, "getting kidnapped". Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens. As if that wasn't enough, turns out the man kidnapping her isn't a local. He's from another planet. In a twisted case of mistaken identity, Delaney is taken to a foreign world where she's forced to pretend to be an alien princess. If she can pull it off long enough for the real princess to be found, she'll get to go home, if she doesn't, she risks enslaving the entire human race. Tricking the princess's betrothed, Trystan, isn't going to be easy, but not falling for Ruckus, her accidental kidnapper, might be an even bigger feat. Especially when the three of them get caught up in a deadly game of truth or dare. Will Delaney be able to pull off the acting job of a lifetime, or will she ultimately be the cause of a massive war? One the human race most likely won't survive.

I have mixed feelings about Amid Stars and Darkness, but at the end of the day I have to say I really enjoyed it!

The characters were quite entertaining. Delaney is snarky and tough. Her lack of self-preservation could have been the death of her a handful of times, but she just doesn’t stop, and I loved that. You tell ‘em, girl! I liked Ruckus well enough, but I have to say I found Trystan more compelling as a character.

Now, I will say there are some things I would have liked to have seen done differently. The world building leaves much to be desired, for one. I also wish there had been more depth to the story. I think this had the potential to be multi-layered and phenomenal, but at the end of the day it’s lacking that umph. Ultimately, it’s just a light fun read that happens to involve space and aliens.

Did Amid Stars and Darkness blow me away? No. But do I recommend it? Absolutely. It was an entertaining read and though I’d hoped for a bit more, I can’t help but smile when I think about this one.

Interview with the Author

1.       Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.
I’m a lifelong writer and nerdgirl, an autism advocate, mother of two hilarious kids and I binge watch Netflix wayyyy too much. My debut YA fantasy novel is TRAVELER, the story of a girl who can step through mirrors into alternate realities, and into alternate versions of herself.

2.       When did you realize that you wanted to become a writer? What was the very first thing you ever wrote?
Whenever someone asks me how long I’ve been writing I always answer “I’ve never not.” That’s the truth – I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. As for the first thing I wrote – I do recall writing plays for my stuffed animals to act in, and I even wrote Star Trek fanfiction before fanfiction was even a thing.

3.      Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?
Of course I read my reviews! And everyone gets a bad review every now and then. I’ve been lucky so far – nothing really scathing – but I always try to see where my readers are coming from and learn what I can from every bit of criticism in a review. It’s really easy to get blind to your own writer faults and miss the common traps you’re falling into. Reading your criticism helps you see a broader picture.

4.      Do you have a book in your house that's just destroyed because you've read it so much?
For me, that would be a paperback copy of The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury. I’ve had it since I was eight (I stole it from my older brother) and I still love it and reread it to this day. No one could paint with words like Ray Bradbury.

5.      What was your inspiration for the book?
I once watched an old version of “Alice Through The Looking Glass” on TV as a kid (it was the 1974 version, which was really creepy). I happened to pass a mirror afterward and thought it would be cool if there was another ‘me’ on the other side. I stared at my reflection for a long time until - I swear to you - I saw the other me blink. Scared me a lot to the point that I still get the creeps if I catch my reflection out of the corner of my eye.

6.      What do you normally like to read when not writing?
Young adult, Sci-Fi and steamy romance. I am a sucker for flirting and attraction and any kind of magical element or world.

7.      How much of the characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?
Jessa (my protagonist) is an odd mix of me and my daughter. She’s nerdy and a writer like me, but fierce as hell and protective of her sibling like my daughter. She’s like the best of us both. Danny (Jessa’s brother) is my son, all grown up. Every bit of him, including his autism. Finn is a conglomeration of lots of people, but Pirate Finn (from another reality) was somewhat influenced by a certain TV pirate on a certain primetime fairytale show that I’ve been obsessing over. He’s a real chip off the old block.

8.      What scene was your favorite to write?
The steampunk ball that Jessa attends in another reality. It was such fun to write, and involved one of the more intense romantic scenes – I just love how it came out.

9.      How different would you say the final version of TRAVELER is from the first draft?
Hmmm. Very. And not. There were a lot of changes – the removal of two major subplots and one smaller, but very hard to relinquish subplot, and an overall change to how the entire series would end that had some ramifications on the rewrites of TRAVELER. But all in all, the characters stayed true to who they were, almost all my dialogue survived intact, and all the major scenes that were the “meat” of the story stayed. My book emerged as a much more cohesive, much more dynamic story for it, too.

10.   If you could bring one of your characters to life, who would it be? And why?
Pirate Finn, in a heartbeat. Who doesn’t love a dashing, flirty pirate with an Irish accent?

This is or That

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Traveler. These types of stories can be very “hit or miss” for me, so to be honest, I don’t give them a shot very often. I don’t regret my decision to go ahead with this one.

While there were some aspects of the store that were cliché, I think there was plenty of creativity to make up for it. The premise is fascinating – a girl who finds out she can travel between different realities through reflective surfaces. In different realities there are different circumstances, of course, so there was a lot of pressure on the author to make the alternative realities believable and interesting. I think she did a great job with that, and seeing how different things were for the characters in other realities was one of my favorite parts of the story.

My other favorite part of the story was the dialogue. The banter between the characters was a lot of fun!

I will say that I had to force myself to finish the book, as the last few chapters were a bit lackluster. The epilogue pulled me back in though, and because of that, I might be looking out for the sequel!
