Thanks to Good Choice Reading for the opportunity to share a little bit of myself with you this Spooky Season!

Halloween is my mother’s favorite holiday. Therefore, we always did it BIG!

I have a lot of great memories: my mom staining her face blue when she went as a smurf; my little brother totally freaking his girlfriend out with his werewolf costume; dressing my little dog up as a pumpkin; a scarecrow falling off our roof during a storm, making one heck of a dead body impression sprawled on the front lawn. But I have to say my favorite Halloween memory would have to be the year we put a dummy on the porch.

When I was about 20 and my brother about 18, we made a dummy out of an old pair of overalls, filled with newspaper, a shirt also stuffed to its breaking point. We put a mask over a garbage bag stuffed with paper and topped it all with an old hat. To add to the realism we plugged the leg bottoms into a (yes, old) pair of boots, then dumped “him” into a lawn chair on our front porch.

There he sat. For the entire month of October our dummy sat prone in his chair guarding our porch. The neighborhood got used to seeing him there. Kids bypassed him to knock on our door. Neighbors thought nothing of him as they drove by in their cars. Our dummy had become a recognizable part of our landscaping.

Or so they thought.

On the afternoon of October 31st, we took the dummy off the porch and took him apart, replacing his innards with flesh and bone. My brother donned the overalls, the shirt, the mask and hat—and yes, the boots. He plopped down in the chair, sitting all cockeyed, and waited.
And waited.

And scared the holy bejeezus out of nearly everyone!

The best was one father who literally screamed like a little girl and ran down our driveway, leaving his toddler wondering where his escort disappeared to. Daddy did return to claim his son with a blush staining his cheeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had to go home and change his shorts.

I hope your night of haunting brings you fat free chocolate and giggles to last a lifetime!
Happy Halloween!

And Happy Reading!

~Morgan Kearns

Halloween ten years ago marked the beginning of the end for me as Martha Stewart.

Each year, when my kids were little (they’re now teenagers), we threw a Not-So-Scary Halloween party and lots of planning went into it.

I spent hours making invitations, using my mad scrapbooking skills. Sewing costumes (including my own—the ladybug outfit was my favorite) took the better part of the month as did decorating the house.

The day before the party, I spent all my time baking, planning the scavenger hunt, stuffing the party bags and preparing the food. Bat cupcakes made from scratch, not a mix, that I decorated using my mad cake-decorating skills and homemade frosting. Witches’ Brew. Monster fingers. Veggies and homemade ranch dressing.

I utilized all my inner Martha Stewart-ness.

An hour before the party that ended it all, I asked my daughter to put on her costume. She was going as Madeline: blue dress with a large collar and red ribbon bow, Mary Janes, white socks and a hat. She was adorable.
For five minutes.

She decided she didn’t want to dress up and took off the costume I’d slaved over. (My mom referred to her as a little storm cloud for very good reason.) Short of ordering her to put it back on (which I considered), there was nothing I could say or do to change her mind.
The Witches’ Brew was boring—the kids wanted pop.

The Monster Fingers (pigs in a blanket) were okay, but I think the dads ate most of them.
No one touched the veggies except for a few of the moms. After all, who wants something healthy when there’s so much candy around?

The frosting on the cupcakes was licked off, leaving behind the moist, rich cake I’d made from scratch.

Judging from how much fun the kids had, the party was a success. But I was really disappointed. All my hard work was unnecessary and unappreciated.
We did a few more Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties but my inner Martha was gone. I bought the invitations, purchased simple, no frills costumes, and picked up the cupcakes at the grocery store.

Turns out, the kids had just as much fun and I had a lot more time on my hands.
Happy Halloween!

Short Story by Margeaux Laurent.

The Basement

Margeaux Laurent

I have always had a close group of friends and most of the time we would gather at our friend Brianna’s house and hang out in her parents’ finished basement. It was our hangout, with a full living room, kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom all on one floor. There was a dartboard, a pool table, a big screen TV, a fully stocked fridge and a huge movie collection. It would seem like the perfect hangout for a group of teenagers, but to be honest, I never felt comfortable in that space. I never said anything though. It would take a Halloween night to finally realize that everybody else felt the same way, and the events that occurred would force us all to question our own beliefs in the supernatural.
It was Halloween night, and we had all gathered in Brianna’s basement once more. Jasmine was dressed in a cat woman costume, with her long caramel colored hair in a high ponytail, she sat on the lounge chair drinking a mojito. “Let’s watch some horror flicks!” she said as her doe eyes beamed through her fake lashes.
Brianna pushed back the cape of her Lord of the Rings elf costume as she sifted through her DVD collection, “Which one first, Dracula or the Exorcist?”
“The Exorcist!” Jael and I said in unison.
Jasmine rolled her eyes, “Seriously?” she asked as she sipped her drink.
“Seriously,” I smiled back as I adjusted my black witch’s hat.
Brianna put on the movie and we all settled in to have a horror movie marathon. We had our drinks, pizza, and were ready to go. Halfway through the Exorcist, Jael got up to use the bathroom. As she squeezed through the two recliners and turned down the hallway, she stopped abruptly. “What did you say?” she asked, while looking over her shoulder at me.
I pulled my attention from the TV and looked at her. She seemed a little pale, even in her Frankenstein’s Bride make-up, “I didn’t say anything…”
She looked down the hallway that led to bathroom and then back at me, “I think I need to go home now,” and instead of walking down the hall to the bathroom, she turned for the door that led upstairs.
We didn’t think much of it. Jael had a tendency to have mood swings and we just shrugged it off.
“Typical,” Brianna mumbled as Jael shut the door behind her.
“I’m going to make another mojito, who wants one?” Jasmine asked, as she stood from her chair.
“Me!” I replied.
Jasmine went into the kitchen as Brianna and I kept watching the movie. A few moments later, we heard a glass break.
“You break it, you buy it,” Brianna joked, as she stood to help Jasmine. She didn’t have a chance to reach the kitchen, Jasmine came flying through the doorway and nearly knocked her over.
“What’s wrong?” Brianna asked.
Jasmine shook her head, “Nothing…I …nothing.”
Brianna squinted at her, “You just ran out of the kitchen after dropping a glass. Something must have happened,” she said quizzically.
Jasmine took a short breath, “Fine,” she replied shortly, “I just thought I saw club soda move on its own. That’s all.”
Brianna’s full lips pulled into a grin, “Okay, maybe we’ve had enough horror movies for one night,” she said, while reaching for the remote.
“I’m going home,” Jasmine said as she grabbed her giant handbag.
Brianna and I exchanged a look of disbelief, “Jazz, are you sure?” I asked.
“Yup,” she said while reaching for her keys.
“I can’t let you go,” Brianna said with seriousness, “You’ve been drinking, you can’t drive.”
Jasmine looked up at the ceiling and sighed, “Fine,” she said while tossing her keys to Brianna, “I’m not sleeping down here though.”
“You can sleep upstairs on the couch,” replied Brianna, as she pulled off her grey cloak and threw it on the nearest chair.
I didn’t think much of what Jasmine had said, she has a wicked sense of humor and is known to pull a joke or two, especially on Halloween.
“I think I’ll go to bed too,” I yawned.
“Okay, take the bedroom at the end of the hall,” Brianna replied, as she and Jasmine headed upstairs.
“Goodnight,” I smiled, and gave a tired wave as she shut the door behind her. I could hear her walk down the hallway and heard the door open to the stairs that led out of the basement. I was now alone.
The guestroom was small, but the queen-sized bed was comfortable and I found myself starting to drift to sleep. Just as I felt my eyelids getting heavy, I heard something scratch at the bedroom door. I sat up and starred at the door, half expecting Brianna to walk in. When she didn’t, I brushed it off. I had just watched a notorious horror movie known to mess with people heads. Obviously, I was a little jumpy. At that, I pulled the covers over my head and started to concentrate on sleeping. However, each time I would get close to a deep sleep, I would get an overwhelming feeling that someone was watching me. I felt that if I could gather the courage to look at the door, I would see someone…or something standing there.
This went on for about an hour, and then I heard movement in the basement’s living room. The shuffling of feet, movement of glasses, and then finally the sound of the old recliner being popped into the reclining position let me know that Brianna or Jasmine was back downstairs. Out of absolute relief not to be alone, I jumped from the bed and reached for the door. As I did so, I heard a soft knock and I jumped back.
“Margeaux?” Brianna’s voice whispered.
I pulled the door open to find Brianna and Jasmine standing in the doorway. Brianna’s dark eyes were wild and her short brown hair was a mess “I needed to make sure you were okay…we think someone’s in the house,” she whispered anxiously.
“Were you guys just watching TV?” I asked, as I searched their faces. Jasmine kept looking nervously back down the hall.
“No, we both heard the recliner open and thought it was you. We couldn’t sleep and thought we’d hang out some more…but when we came downstairs, no one was there.” She looked behind her as a strange sound of something sliding on the stone floor made us all jump.
“What are we going to do?” I whispered. The room I was in had no access to a window, and no way out. We would have to walk back through the basement if we were going to make a break for it.
“Brianna, what are you doing?” I asked as she flicked the lock on the door and stepped through the threshold. She was locking Jasmine and I in.
“Just call the cops and stay where you’re safe,” I pleaded.
“I just need to check…besides, I don’t think the cops could help with this,” I heard her reply. I looked at Jasmine who had opened the guestroom closet and started sifting through its contents.
“What are you looking for?”
“A cross, or a rosary…anything like that,” she replied, without looking up.
I felt my heart start pounding and I waited in silence, with my cell phone clutched in my hands, listening hard to hear anything that would make me call 911. Looking over Jasmine’s shoulder, I saw a baseball bat. “I’ll take that,” I walked over and pulled it from the closet.
Jasmine placed a rosary around her neck, “I doubt the bat will help, but if it makes you feel better…”
I was going to respond, but the lamp by the bedside table began to flicker as though it was about to turn off, we both stared at it with dread and I felt my hands begin to shake. I knew that Brianna had told us to stay in the room, but I couldn’t take it anymore. As I opened the door, Jasmine pushed past me and went into the bathroom. Not bothering to shut the door, she went to the sink and splashed cold water on her face. I held my breath and waited in the guestroom hallway.
“This is unbelievable,” Jasmine gasped as she leaned over the sink.
I opened my mouth to reply, but I froze in fear as a shadowy figure formed between Jasmine and the bathroom door. Jasmine, seeming to sense the ominous presence, looked up as the form moved behind her. The towels hanging from the rack on the opposing wall were left swaying from its presence.
Jasmine reached for her stomach, as though she was going to vomit and I let out a shriek as Brianna turned the corner of the hallway. “What’s wrong?” she asked with alarm.
“Look,” I pointed with a shaking hand.
Brianna’s eyes followed my outstretched fingers and she shrugged, “What?”
“It was just there,” Jasmine said in a small voice, “It was in the room with me.”
Brianna walked into the bathroom and looked around, “I didn’t see anything and I checked the whole basement…nothing’s down here,” she insisted.
“What was it then?” I asked with disbelief.
“I have no clue…I don’t want to know,” Brianna replied.
We all spent the rest of the night upstairs on the couch exchanging our versions of the night’s events. In the morning, we decided to keep the story to ourselves. We didn’t want people to think we were crazy. Little did we know that our friends would find nothing to laugh at.
Two nights later, as we were all sitting around talking at a local restaurant, Jael started off the conversation by saying to Brianna, “Your basement is the creepiest place I have ever been…I didn’t think I would last down there Halloween night.”
Brianna and Jasmine exchanged a look and I searched Jael’s face for signs of a prank coming on, but Erica and Matilda, both of which had not been there on Halloween night, just nodded their heads in agreement. No one responded the way I was anticipating. One by one, our friends shared their own experiences in that basement.
“Something whispered in my ear that night…that’s why I left so quickly,” Jael admitted.
“One time, when I went into the kitchen, something pushed me in the back,” Matilda said in a soft voice as she stared down at her French manicure, “At first, I thought it was my imagination, but I had a bruise on my back for a week.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Brianna pressed.
Matilda raised her eyes, “I thought you would think I was crazy.”
“The last time I stayed over, I felt like I was being watched all night,” Erica added with discomfort, “Brianna, has your home always been haunted?”
Brianna took a long drink of her martini, “I never really experienced anything until Halloween…I mean, I heard strange things before, but nothing like that night.”
We went on comparing notes for a good half hour, and we all felt a sense of relief in learning that we weren’t the only person who was experiencing something unexplainable…but that sense of comfort was short lived.
Months later, Brianna finally confronted her parents about their basement. Being from a highly religious family, they requested that a priest come to the home to either verify or deny our claims. The Priest only spent a few minutes in the basement and refused to come back, leaving a bottle of holy water behind. He said that it was more than he could personally handle.
Since that day, her family will not talk about it or even acknowledge our claims. While they insist that the basement is fine after the priest’s visit, Brianna refuses to enter that space again, and none of us have hung out in that basement since.

Author Bio:

I have always been drawn to the supernatural and as I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with my Grandmother Rose, who shared the same interests. When I was nine, she led me to her book collection which was stocked with horror stories. She had everything from Bram Stoker to Anne Rice, and many books on magic, supernatural creatures, and ancient societies.

Of course, Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Together, my Grandmother and I would decorate her house and get all the candy ready for our neighborhood trick-or-treaters. I would help her set up and then get into my costume and meet with my friends.
“Be careful tonight,” Grandma Rose would remind me as I reached for the door, “the walls between our world and the spirit world are thin on this holiday.” I would smile back with my vampire fangs flashing and promise to be safe. Then, I would leave and meet my friends for our Halloween adventures.

While I have lived all over the country, I feel that there is something special about celebrating the holiday in New Jersey. The state is steeped in folklore, ghost stories, and urban legends, and on Halloween night, New Jersey’s spooky side comes to life. Of course, my friends and I would add to the effect by listing the monsters that were speculated to be from our area as we walked through the dark streets. More than once we found ourselves jumping out of our skin as a cat hissed from nearby fence, or a car backfired. The crisp October air, the leaves crunching under our feet, and the eerie howling sound of the wind rushing through the trees made Halloween nights that much spookier.

I traveled often as a child, and my interest in folklore prompted me to ask a lot of questions during my stay in different countries. One of the most fascinating aspects of folklore is that, no matter where you travel, people normally have the same tales of monsters, and "otherworldly" beings. This always made me ponder what thread of truth ran through these ancient legends and connected them from country to country, culture to culture.

As I grew older, my interests expanded beyond the realm of folklore and, as a result, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arizona State University in 2008, with a Bachelors in Applied Biological Sciences and a minor in Applied Psychology.

After graduation, I, like so many others, faced the harsh reality of a diminished economy and was unable to find work. While this was disappointing and a little bit of a blow to my ego, it was a blessing in disguise. I finally had the time to sit down and write the story of Aislin, a story that had been with me for years.

Currently, I am working on my Masters of Science in Space Studies and continuing the story of Aislin in the Spellbound series.

Giveaway:

It is 1734 in Burlington, New Jersey, and nineteen-year-old Aislin Collins carries many secrets, but the one that threatens to surface has the potential to change her life forever: Aislin is a witch.

Now, something evil lurks in the woods outside Aislin's home. Animals are found slaughtered and drained of every drop of blood. It stalks in the shadows as men patrol the forest nightly to hunt the unknown malice, but the creature is not interested in them. It is after Aislin, for the creature is the servant of a witch hunter, and is cloaked by dark magic. As rumors spread through town, Aislin is protected by a handsome, mysterious stranger who disappears as quickly as he arrives. Even as the witch hunter haunts her every step, her protector, Greer, appears in all her dreams.

Aislin realizes she is falling undeniably in love with Greer, but her mother is suspicious of him and fears that Aislin is falling into a trap. Soon, Aislin must face a destiny she never foresaw, but as she attempts to protect herself and all those she loves from the witch hunter's wrath, the spirits keep warning her, "Things are not as they appear"...

Most Memorable Halloween

It’s an understatement to say that Halloween, the most nefarious holiday of the year, brings out our darker sides, mine in particular. It’s a time when I can escape reality for a few hours, stuff my face with all kinds of candy (I once heard a rumor that Halloween candy has no calories), carve creepy pumpkins, dress up in costume and be part of a hopping coast-to-coast masquerade party. I grew up in the Caribbean where Halloween wasn’t really celebrated, so I’m still making up for lost time!

For the most part, my choice of costume tends to vacillate between a witch and a vampire. In the case of the latter, I even had a pair of custom-made porcelain fangs. Yes, you read that right. Custom. Porcelain. Fangs. The way I see it is that it’s all about commitment to the character. Not that, of course, I actually believed I was a vampire, but I enjoyed looking and feeling the part. For me, the draw of vampires has always been their mystery, their sensuality, and their supernatural abilities. If it weren’t for the blood, I’m certain I would have made an excellent chocolate-eating vampire.

One of my most memorable Halloween escapades was back in 1998, when I was invited to a Halloween Party at the Playboy Mansion. Technically, my friend was invited and I was her “plus one.”

(I can only show you the inside of the invitation as the outside is far too risqué!)

Anyway, I decided to go as … you guessed it, a vampire. However, my customary vampire attire required some serious sassing up. I mean if I was going to be in the illustrious company of the notoriously gorgeous women at the Playboy Mansion, I needed a badass, smoking hot costume. As I said before, I’m all about the commitment to character. So with that in mind, armed with a sheer Indian gauze skirt, bikini top, long black wig with gold coin headband, gold arm bracelets, stilettos, oodles of kohl eyeliner and my trusty fangs, I was set. I was going to be the hottest Egyptian belly-dancer vampire EVER.

To get into the mansion, everyone had to be checked against a guest list at the gates by some pretty daunting men-in-black security guards, and then there was a second security check at the top of the driveway. This Halloween do was strictly by invitation only. Once inside, it was just as insanely awesome as all the tabloid magazines described, and I was suitably star-struck by all the Hollywood glitz. From Doherty to Anderson, the celebrities were in costume and in fine form. I even ventured into the infamous grotto, only to find Pauly Shore prancing around in a pink tutu. But the best part of the evening came when Hugh Hefner walked down the stairs escorted by the most skimpily clad playboy bunnies I’ve ever seen while wearing a “Prisoner of Love” inmate costume. Classic.

All in all, it was a pretty fabulous Halloween party, and an experience I’ll never forget. My costume was a hit and an instant conversation starter, “belly dancers need blood too.” I did feel slightly overdressed, but live and learn I always say. Next time (if ever there’s a next time), I will have to be far more inventive. I’m thinking Malibu Barbie vampire. But that’s a story for another night! Happy Halloween!

*No bunnies were endangered during the retelling of this story.

Worst Halloween Ever

You know how sometimes the lowest points of our lives become the funniest when you look back on them? Well, last Halloween was one of those times. My son was four and trick-or-treating as one of the transformers. My daughter was two and dressed like a ballerina. She should have been a ninja. Ever since she's been able to walk, she's had this incredible ability to slip away undetected. And she's a master at hiding too. She'll find somewhere small and dark, where you think, there's no way she'll hide there, it's too scary. Then she stays silent for…however long it takes to find her. Seriously. This could be up to thirty minutes. It's creepy.

Anyway, while trick-or-treating, my daughter put her ninja ballerina skills to the test and disappeared. Right in the middle of the biggest, most pimped out Halloween house I've ever seen. Lit up pumpkins lined the walkway. Gravestones dotted along the lawn. Ghosts swayed from the trees (I have not yet verified that those were decorations). Fog machine, creepy soundtrack, the whole shebang. It was like a Halloween party store and an amusement park got together and had a baby on their lawn.

My son had one thing on his mind. Candy. So he went running down the walkway toward the tacky house promising tricks and treats. I could see the owners at the door dressed up like characters from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Now, I'm a regular Frankie fan, but how was I supposed to explain a man in a corset and high heels to a curious four year old? So I ran ahead with my son while my husband was supposed to be watching ninja girl.

After thanking the Rocky cast for the candy, I turned around to find my daughter missing and my husband studying the mechanical hand popping up from the ground (he's an engineer, 'nuff said?).

A search party that could rival the FBI ensued. Ten frantic minutes later, we found a chocolate faced ballerina hanging out with a ghost behind one of the gravestones. Goodbye early bedtime.

Fast forward a couple hours later and ninja baby was asleep in her bed. My son was sitting on our bed watching the Disney Channel with hubby. I was doing some writing at our breakfast bar, not pigging out on the kid's candy. All of the sudden, some black creature from hell came flying straight at my head. I screamed then ducked under the counter. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a bat. I rolled my eyes at the irony. A bat loose in the house on Halloween. Can we get anymore cliché?

Regardless, it still freaked me out. Have you ever studied a bat's flight patterns? They are completely chaotic and unpredictable. I know they're blind and use echolocation, yadda, yadda, yadda. But I think this one was drunk too. Anyway, I was so paranoid the thing would get stuck in my hair, I got down on the ground and crawled - army style - across the kitchen floor, screaming, “Bat! Bat!” My husband came running down the stairs, thinking the house was on fire and I locked myself in the playroom.

After a few minutes, I peeked out the door to see him waving the American flag we usually have hanging outside like he's practicing for Color Guard. He later explained it was the only way to catch the bat without hurting it. A net, somehow, didn't cross his mind. Whatever. I'll leave the bat wrangling to him.

So, hubby yelled that the bat flew upstairs where my son was sitting quietly watching Wizards of Waverly Place. Did he bat an eye (pun intended) that a drunken winged creature was zooming around the room like a helicopter with a broken propeller? Nope. Wizards of Waverly Place is that good.

Hubby followed the bat to our room, flag in tow. The flag soared around the room, mimicking the erratic patterns of bat flight. Decorations flew off shelves. Pictures fell off walls. Finally, the bat got wrapped up in the flag and both went down in a flurry of red, white, and blue.

And to top it all off, ninja baby threw up chocolate chunks in her bed.

And that was my worst Halloween ever.

Guest Post: 3 of My Favorite Things About Halloween – By Deznee Cross

Sup? Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I mean, when else can you get away with wearing a French maid outfit to school? Okay, you might not get away with it—our principle would probably send you home—but still… There are a zillion reasons I love Halloween, so I thought I’d pop in and share a few.

1. Epic battles.

What other day of the year can you see Cinderella going all super smack down on a Nun? I dunno about you, but Celebrity Death Match has nothing on the parties in Parkview. Last year, some dude dressed as Mickey Mouse totally laid out some huge guy dressed as Thor. That’s not something you see everyday… Even in a place like Parkview.

2. Free candy. Sugar.

It’s one of the best things man ever discovered—next to coffee, of course. I swear, one of these days I’m gonna petition to have Candy Corn available in stores all year round. I love them so much, I even toss them into my coffee. Hey—don’t judge! Some people put marshmallows in hot chocolate. Now that’s sick…

3. Dress up isn't just for little kids.

Everyone loves to play dress up. If you say you’re not into it—you’re lying. It’s the one day of the year where it’s acceptable to walk around wearing thigh high boots, too much make-up and huge glittering fairy wings. Or you could go for awesome and slip into a Lara Croft get up—but never a Playboy Bunny. That’s way lame. CoughcoughMercyCoughcough…

Okay. I showed you mine, now show me yours! What are some of your favorite things about Halloween?

THE MANY FACES OF HALLOWEEN
By Laura J. Burns & Melinda Metz
We love the paranormal! Together, we've written about vampires, demons that can only be killed with compliments, sea monsters, aliens, angels, people with assorted psychic powers, and the apocalypse.  Naturally, we both adore Halloween.  But when trying to figure out what to write a Halloween blog post about, well, we almost had to throw down. It turns out that while we always think we share all the same tastes, we were tragically wrong in this case.   Apparently, we love Halloween for completely different reasons.

Melinda is all about the scares, the screams, the gross and the gore.  Laura is all about the fun, the fantasy, the sparkly, and the sexy.  (We both enjoy the candy, though. Way too much.)  The more we thought about it, the more sense it made.  Melinda counts Stephen King among her favorite authors. Laura read one Stephen King short story in high school and never looked back.  Melinda still has nightmares about when she saw The Exorcist as a kid. Laura vaguely recalls watching Nightmare on Elm Street at a sleepover party once, but thinks she fell asleep before the end. On Halloween Melinda decorates her yard with skeletal flamingos (formerly pink).  Laura has spiders and ghosts, but the spiders are cute and furry, while the ghosts are of the Casper-the-friendly variety.

As a kid, Laura always dressed up as a princess, a butterfly, a fairy, or a bride. Except in high school, where she tended to simply wear pajamas and bunny slippers to class. Melinda preferred going out as some sort of ghoul.  She did wear a nightgown once, but only after splashing it with green puke made of corn syrup, food coloring, and flour (The Exorcist made a really big impression).

And the trend has continued into adulthood. We thought about our favorite Halloween memories.  Melinda's fave was the year she won Berkley Publishing's costume contest.  (She was an editor there at the time.)  She dressed up as Carrie, post the prom-night dousing in pig blood.  There aren't many costumes that involve more gore.  Fake blood was splattered over the silky nightgown that was subbing for a prom dress, spattered over her wrist corsage and tiara, dripping down her face. The top of her head was drenched.  It was all very fabulous (in her opinion, not Laura's), and she got to pull out her shooting-psychic-powers-at-you stare, which is definitely something worth seeing.  And the best part of being Carrie for a night was when the party was over.  She got to (well, had to) reenact the scene from the movie where Carrie washes off the blood after the prom.  Watching all the fake blood run down the drain? Unforgettable!

Laura is horrified by even the idea of a costume that would make her walk around with her hair drenched in goo.  She sees Halloween as an excuse to look even better than usual.  Perhaps her favorite costume ever was Jessica Rabbit, because of the elbow-length gloves (which even Melinda concedes are quite glam) and the fabulous long red hair. Plus, sexy red dress!  And it was funny, which is equally important.  And her favorite Halloween memory took place in a New York City cab on the way to a party. Laura and her friends were dressed in vintage Star Trek uniforms--you know, short, tight dresses and go-go boots with big hair and retro makeup. They had, of course, phasers (set on stun).  At a red light, they spotted a bunch of Klingons on the sidewalk, rolled down the cab windows, and proceeded to have a huge gunfight.  Starfleet totally won.

So how could the two of us agree on a reason that Halloween is so awesome and blog-worthy? Um...we couldn't. But it doesn't matter! Because we realized that it's why we're so good at writing the paranormal together. Melinda comes at it from the horror/gore realm--the scary, the spooky, the gross.  And Laura comes at it from the sci-fi realm--the action, the sexiness, the otherworldly.  Put all those things together and you've got the makings of all kinds of imaginary craziness.

Our conclusion is this: Halloween rocks because it can be fun and grotesque and terrifying and silly. There's something for everyone. And no matter what, there is always candy.
