Review: Becoming a Vincent by C.M. Owens

Title: Becoming a Vincent (The Wild Ones #1)

When you live in a place where “turbo speed” internet is a slight step above dial-up, men carry on nine-year beard-growing challenges out of stubborn pride, and your brothers do things like nail all your panties to the outside of your cabin just for funsies, you tend to be a little crazy. You can call it a "locational" hazard, if you will.
That’s Tomahawk for you.
We rank people based on just how crazy they are. And the four craziest families in town are called the Wild Ones. I’m on the bottom tier of those, so technically I’m not as crazy as the other Wild Ones. In fact, if it wasn’t for my brothers and their endless antics, I wouldn’t be considered a Wild One at all. Ahem. Sure. We’ll go with that.
Anyway, I have a best friend who endures it all with me. Benson Nolans is my one, constant favorite person.Without him, I’d probably go really crazy, and not the fun kind. It’d be ridiculous, after three years of a flawless friendship, to mess that all up by falling for him.
I mean, even if we did get a little too close one night, it’d be reckless endangerment. Even if we did suddenly feel the chemistry that’s always been there and stop toeing the line, it’d be a foolish risk to take.
It’d be stupid to start hoping a really fun, but completely irrational, night with zero inhibitions might accidentally happen.Really stupid…
Right?
*NO cliffhanger*Stand-alone book *Sexual Content*Adult language*Completely, 100% crazy

C.m. Owens is fast becoming one of my go to authors if I need a good laugh. I re-read her Sterling Shore series anytime I feel like busting a gut. They're hilarious. I'm really glad she's releasing a new hilarious series. Becoming a Vincent is on the shorter side, and you'll run right through it, because it's too funny to put down.

Lilah is one of the members of one fourth of the corner of crazies in Tomahawk, Washington. That means she is tame compared to the girls from the other three corners. And Benson is her best friend. I don't really want to give too much away, but let's just say these two are playing hide and seek with the feelings. They have great chemistry, and a fantastic friendship. And Benson is a patient man, he'd have to be in order to put up with Lilah, her brothers, and the rest of her family. I really don't want to give away any part of the story, but the antics? Oh man. Laugh out loud funny.

Needless to say, I'd highly recommend this story...or pretty much anything C.m. Owens has written. I seriously cannot wait for more of the citizens of Tomahawk, and I especially can't wait for all the crazy that's to come.

Review: Raised in Fire by K.F. Breene

Title: Raised in Fire (Fire and Ice Trilogy #2)
Author: K.F. Breene
Published: May 16, 2017 (Kindle edition, 432 pages)
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Goodreads | Amazon

It is a common truth in my life that when it rains, it pours.

The killings that once plagued New Orleans are cropping up again in Seattle. The local office is stumped. I’m called out to lend a fresh set of eyes, and my unique magical touch.

It’s only when I get there that I realize the Seattle office isn’t stumped at all.

They’re being silenced by the Mages’ Guild, a corrupt magical institution that doesn't want word to get out of what is plaguing the city. Worse, news of my magic might’ve slipped down to the underworld, hitting the ears of some extremely powerful demons.

What I thought was a routine murder investigation turns into a fight for my life. With the help of Darius, my stalker elder vampire, and my dual-mage side kicks, I somehow have to dodge the Guild in order to stop one of the most powerful demons I’ve ever encountered. If I don’t? It’ll escape back down below with proof of what I really am.

My life hangs in the balance, and this time, I can't see a way out.

As you've probably realized, I'm a pretty big K.f. Breene fan. I love her story lines, and her fierce and feisty heroines. Reagan is no exception. And with the third and final book in the trilogy coming out in just a little more than a month, I figured I had better get on writing this review.

When Raised in Fire starts, we learn that someone has been talk talk talking, and news of Reagan's possible parentage and abilities has made its way to the underworld. We meet Agnon, who is referred to as an it, but let's be honest...he's a legit demon. And this guy brings calls an aswang. I put it in italics, because that's what you do. I had to look up what an aswang even was. Now, there are lots of variations of what an aswang is but the gist of it is: An Aswang is a shapeshifting monster in Filipino folklore. And take a gander at these creeps.

Freaky, am I right? The aswang was seriously just a small part of the story, but since I think cryptid's are AWESOME, I just had to talk about it.

Okay, moving on. So there's some strange murdering going on in Seattle, and Reagan is sent that way to check it out. And since Darius is a little bit stalky, he makes sure to be there with her. There is a little bit of bow chicka wow wow in this part of the story. But trust me, Reagan makes him work for it. I find it a lot of fun that Darius thinks Reagan is perfect, and she's just like-Dude. Stop it. Relax. She's not buying the bs.

There is quite a lot of action in this part of the story. Of course, Reagan is keeping secrets, because she has to. Some people find out, some people don't. Some suspicions are confirmed, some are denied. Things like that. I imagine Reagan is not going to be able to hide forever, though. Her father is bound to find out that she exists. Guess we'll have to wait until the next book to see what happens with that.

Every night after Ember Pierce falls asleep, she disappears. She can teleport anywhere in the world—London, Paris, her crush’s bedroom—wherever her dreams lead her. Ten minutes is all she gets, and once time’s up, she returns to her bed. It's a secret she’s successfully kept for the last five years. But now someone knows.

A week after her eighteenth birthday, when frustratingly handsome Caden Hawthorne captures her, delivers her to the government, and then disappears before her eyes, Ember realizes two things: One, she is not alone. And two, people like her—teleporters—are being used as weapons.

Dragged off to a remote facility where others like her live, Ember’s forced to pair up with her former captor, Caden, to learn how to survive inside until she can escape. Only Caden’s making escape seem less and less appealing.

But even as Ember falls for the boy who got her into this mess, she knows that she is running out of time. Because the government has plans for those like her, and those plans might just cost Ember her life.

Okay, so this book is kind of crazy. Ember is an experiment, essentially. She's a young girl who has special abilities and she had no idea she wasn't the only one until the day the government came knocking on her door. She's then taken away from her family and whisked off to a secret facility.

I just want to say real quick that I can't really believe what the government is making these kids do. Like, these are teenagers. They're still kids. They're being sent into dangerous situations with no regard for their young lives. I mean, actually, I guess I can believe what the government is making them do. I'm not sure if this book was supposed to be a metaphor, but that's how I related to it, personally. But that's just me. You may get something completely different out of it than I did.

I also think, on some level that The Vanishing girl could be classified as a YA, or possibly coming of age. I kind of veered away from thinking of it as a YA because there is sex in it. I liked this story. I kind of had to put it out of my mind that these were just kids. It wasn't hard, the author did well in not always reminding us that these were just teenagers, though it was right at the back of my mind throughout the story. Of course they are mature. They have to be. They have to learn how to navigate very adult situations. So there is a bit of action in the book.

The story ends on a huge cliffhanger. I don't mind a cliffhanger, especially since I'm a series reader. I know they're just par for the course, but I wanted to make that clear. If you don't mind a cliffy, and you're one of the people who don't mind buying another book to finish a good story, I'd recommend The Vanishing Girl. If you're a cliffy hater, maybe skip this one. But personally, I'm going to get myself the second book asap.

Supernatural Bounty Hunter isn’t the sort of thing you see on LinkedIn. But with a rare type of magic like mine, I don’t have many options. If people found out what I could do—what I am—I would kiss my freedom goodbye.

So dangerous or not, the job is mine. And it was going fine, until an old as sin vampire stole my mark, and with it, my pay day.

Knowing I’m poor and desperate, he has offered me a job. I’ll have to work by his side to help solve a top secret case.

Everyone knows not to trust vampires. Especially a hot elder vampire. But without any other jobs coming up, I’m stuck. As I uncover a web of lies and treachery, revealing an enemy I didn’t know existed, the truth of my identity is threatened. I might make it out alive, only to end up in a gilded cage.

Okay, real quick before Raised in Fire comes out on May 16, I wanted to go ahead and talk about Born in Fire. Born in Fire is a bit of a crazy ride. With Breene's usual brand of kick butt heroine, and her women not taking any crap from anyone, this was a fun read.

Reagan is a Supernatural Bounty Hunter. So, basically she goes out and hunts supernatural creatures. You know she's gotta have a backbone, some attitude, and a sword carrying skill set. No seriously, she kicks a**. There are some overlapping genres going on here. There are elements of paranormal, but there are also elements I would think would be classified as urban fantasy. There are witches and warlocks, vampires and shifters, mention of elves, though we don't meet any in this part of the story, and possibly Lucifer. You'd think that would make the story crazy, and it does, but in a fun and easy to follow way. It's also set in New Orleans.

The ending is wrapped up nicely. It leaves the possibilities open without a huge cliff hanger. If you like a story with lots of action, a fierce heroine, and a good cast of secondary characters, I'd definitely recommend this book. I can't wait to see what's next.

DALE
I'm a mature and very pragmatic person, whom others like to call boring.
At least I was...until Harley came back into town...

What do you do when a girl comes back for some petty revenge against you and seduction is part of her game?
You pretend to be a millionaire dom, of course.
Yeah...it sounded better in theory. My execution keeps ending up in awkward messes, and this game between us gets even messier when I learn more about Harley. She's easy to fall for, even though she's hazardous as hell.
What happens when all the games end?

HARLEY
One simple little goal turns into one giant disaster.
On the surface, Dale Sterling seemed like an asshole from my past; the typical arrogant guy who boulders through life and anyone in his way. So a little revenge seemed plausible, considering what he did to me once upon a long time ago. In hindsight, it was immature. But revenge has kept me on top of the world since I stopped being on the bottom of everyone's shoes, so I make no apologies for my immaturity.
But Dale is weirdly kinky...
Everything is going fine...until it gets real. Now the guy I wanted to humiliate is the same guy I'm begging my heart not to stupidly fall in love with.
Unfortunately, my heart tends to be stubborn.

*Can be read as a stand-alone
*Sexual content
*Adult language

I wanted to talk about Make Me because I'm gearing up to May 8, when Taming a Maverick goes live. I actually love this whole series. I'm not sure I've laughed through so many books in one series. With that, on to talking specifically about Make Me.

Dale, I love him. He's the more practical cousin in this series. He's calm, cool, and laid back. Until he runs back into Harley, that is. Then he thinks it'd be a good idea to pretend he's a Dom. This is where all the hilarious begins. I'm not sure you'd believe the things that happen when a guy who has no clue what being a dom entails, tries to pretend he knows what he's doing. But it's laugh out loud funny.

Harley comes back to Sterling Shore to settle a couple of scores. One involves family. The other involves Dale Sterling. They went to high school together, and Dale unknowingly caused a bunch of drama for Harley for the remainder of her time in high school. Well, actually, all the Sterling boys did, but she took the brunt of the abuse. But, she runs into him again, and all of the confidence she's gained since high school just flies out the window.

Add the usual SS suspects, and Dale pretending to be a Dom, and you've got 330 pages of hilarious. Now, Maverick is next. I can only imagine Salem is going to run him through the ringer. I can't wait.

Review: Wild & Sweet: Haven Brotherhood by Rhenna Morgan

Wild & Sweet
by Rhenna Morgan
Haven Brotherhood book 2
Expected publication: April 10, 2017
by Carina Press
ebook

Add to Goodreads

Zeke Dugan is not a man who walks the straight and narrow. He may have sworn an oath as a trauma doc, but he has zero problem leveraging his medical skills outside a hospital if it means giving the Brotherhood—the group of men he calls family—an advantage. Blood before business. All that changes when shy Gabrielle stumbles into his life and ignites his protective instincts.
Mechanic Gabrielle Parker prefers the complexities of an engine over men. Her life wasn't always quiet and well-ordered, but now that it is, she finds peace in the solitude. When a robbery in her neighborhood forces her out of her safe bubble, she never fathoms that a dangerous, cocky trauma doctor will fix more than her injuries.
Zeke doesn't play by the rules that Gabrielle follows but knows that he's exactly what she needs in her life. He'll show her the fierce and uncompromising protection that comes from belonging to a man like him.
When tension outside the Brotherhood threatens Gabrielle, Zeke will do anything to keep her safe, and damn the consequences. No one will hurt his woman, even if it means putting the very men who saved his life at risk.

I found Wild & Sweet...different. Not in a bad way, just not really a story that I'd normally read. I missed the first book in this series. While it can be read as a standalone, I think I would like to find the first book and give it a read.
I found the concept of the Brotherhood to be a different type of story as well. All these guys found each other at a time in their lives when they needed family. It's kind of like a club that you have to be invited into. They sit removed from others, and then when they invite someone along, that person is shocked and in awe of their luck. I thought it was a little bit strange. Anyway, moving on.
Zeke is a trauma doctor, and Gabrielle is a habitually shy mechanic. They meet when her brother Danny is talking to the guys at the bar one night, and he gets a phone call from Gabrielle. There was a break in at the neighbors, and she took a good push. Zeke is a character I liked for the most part. I have a couple of issues with Gabrielle. She seems to have a serious issue with thinking everyone around her is going to leave. Her parents are gone, and her brother is all she has now. She also jumps to conclusions without understanding all the elements, and she can be a little bit judgmental. I get it. Life can be traumatic, but there are times when I kind of found myself thinking- Seriously?
I liked Zeke, I didn't hate Gabrielle, and I enjoyed the side characters. All in all, aside from a few small issues, I enjoyed Wild & Sweet. If you like a pack of alpha males, and a shy heroine with maybe a little bit of separation anxiety, this story is for you.

Blog Tour Review & Giveaway: SINGLE by Collette West!

Single by Collette West
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance

Underdog Luke “Single” Singleton is yearning to make a comeback. After getting hit in the neck with a pitch—an injury that nearly cost him his life—he has one last chance to play for his hometown team, the Stockton Beavers. But his mom has Alzheimer’s, and he’s all she has to depend on. How can he pursue his career, much less someone special?

Personal care aide Roberta Bennett is done dating baseball players. Having had her share of heartbreak, she heads to Stockton hoping for a fresh start. But after she finds Luke’s mom outside, lost, and alone, she can’t refuse when he hires her on the spot. Unbeknownst to Luke, Roberta is all too familiar with the violent tendencies of the pitcher who hit him.

Now that they’re living under the same roof, the last thing either of them is looking for is a relationship. But it’s not long before they find themselves drawn to each other. And right when Luke is thinking about finally making a change to his single status, a secret from Roberta’s past emerges with the power to tear them apart.

_________________________________________________

Single was a pleasant surprise. This story resonated with me on a pretty deep level because of one thing, Alzheimer’s. Luke’s mother has it, and I understand perfectly every emotion he felt in this story. I’m not sure if you’ve ever had to deal with a loved one that has it, and if you never do, you’re lucky. My grandmother, one of the most important people in my life, the one person I could go to for anything, I could tell anything, my absolute favorite person in the world got it early and died from it early. So yeah, this story touched me. But, enough of that. Let’s talk about the book.

So, I loved Luke, for obvious reasons. He was loyal, and loving, and for such a small package, he had the best heart. I have to tell you, through what I’ve read of this series, I haven’t really been Roberta’s biggest fan, but she surprised me. I found she was actually a very likeable character. She’s not always nice. She’s guarded, and has been through out the series, and we find out why in Single. Her’s is a hard story. Unpleasant, and it’s a lot easier to empathize with her when you hear every thing she’s been through. I thought-Okay, now I get it.- I’m not going to give anything away, but let’s just say it was easy to change my mind about her. Aside from the issues going on with Luke’s Mom, he has some other stuff going on. I loved him, he’s such a fighter. Never gives up.

I love that this series is a sports romance, without being too sporty, if that makes sense. I mean, of course there is baseball talk, it is a baseball romance after all, but it’s not so overdone that someone that doesn’t really understand baseball, like myself, can’t get into. So, really great job with this one Ms. West. You’ve got my appreciation. I would definitely recommend Single.

 About the Author

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.

She is the author of NIGHT GAMES, GAME CHANGER and GAME ON.

Identical Disaster

JAX
My life was simple... until Bo Brendon crashed into my lap. Shy girls aren't my thing, yet somehow, she's under my skin and in my head. It's a f*cking nightmare. Yet it's a nightmare I don't want to give up.
   10984115_688235271319103_8547564295436669745_n.jpg
BOLIVIA (BO)
Jax Marshall was an accident. A really sexy, smart, incredibly smooth, hot... accident. He's the kind of guy you shouldn't fall in love with, because he could crush you with barely any effort. Especially someone like me. Either it will be the best thing to ever happen to me, or it will be the disaster that leaves me in ruins. I guess I'll find out.
       12705715_971190946299053_4000405638686147557_n

Okay, I just wanted to start off by saying that I was stupidly excited that I got to be part of this tour. I absolutely love the Sterling Shore series, and as with the rest of the series, Identical Disaster did not disappoint.

So, before this point, we really don’t know much about Jax or Bo. Both of them are super private. Bo has really good reasons. Jax just doesn’t like people to know his business. Can’t say I blame him there. These two are cute. Both trying to out game the other. There are some really great scenes in ID, laugh out loud scenes. I love a book that can make me laugh.

Jax is a bit of a contradiction. He can be a real jerk off, and he can also be really sweet. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t like Bo at all, considering. I also don’t blame him for liking her either, because she is really just that awesome. She’s such a nice person. A nice person that doesn’t always put herself before others. Things get a little crazy, honestly. Bo is just pushed too far, and she’s finally just had it. I don’t blame her. She’s really too sweet for the type of people she allows into her life. And like I said, Jax can be a real jerk off. But, that said, I actually felt a bit sorry for him. I’m not going to tell you why. That’s something you’ll have to read to find out, which I HIGHLY recommend. I will say this, I loved watching both Jax and Bo grow. It was as funny as it was great to see.

I loved ID as much as I’ve loved the other stories in this series. Ethan and Bella are next, and since I’ve been dying for these two to even meet each other, I have to say I CANNOT WAIT!! I hope Ms. Owens writes fast. Seriously, READ THIS SERIES!!

Distraction: The great intensity, novelty, or attractiveness of something other than the object of attention.
Sven is a man who takes pride in his ability to separate himself from his emotions. He's a man who knows who he is and where he’s going in life, a man who needs no one, because needing someone, anyone, is a weakness.
His past taught him love isn’t enough.
Maggie wants the happily ever after, but has never picked the right men, or stuck around long enough, to build a forever. It’s always been easier to get out early, before emotions make things messy.

When Maggie wakes up naked in Sven’s bed, with no memory of the night before, these two must be honest about their feelings and face their fears, so they can build a future together.
Will love be enough for them to get their happy ending together, or will a threat from outside strike them down before they ever have a chance?
EXCERPT
“You’re not allowed on the club floor anymore,” I state firmly.
“I’m going to find the guys who hurt my sister,” she states, and I see the determination in her eyes that make me proud and pissed at the same time.
“If you come, you come to my office, and if something happens down there”—I point to the club floor over my shoulder—“you’ll be the first to know.”
“Why would I come to your office? I need to be at the bar where I can see what’s going on.”
“You just got the job as my new assistant,” I tell her, watching her frown while wondering what the f*ck I’m doing. This chick is a distraction I do not need right now, or ever for that matter.
“I already have a job,” she says as her frown grows deeper.
“Well, quit. You’re here every night, Mags, and you don’t leave ‘til the club closes at one. I can tell by the bags under your eyes that you’re exhausted.”
“Why would you want me to work here?” Now, isn’t that the million dollar question?
“Either take me up on my offer, or I’m going to have a restraining order placed against you and you won’t be allowed within a few hundred feet of the club.”  I shrug like it’s all the same to me.
“You know this is malarkey, right?” she stands and I take her in fully for the first time tonight. Her loose, sheer, black dress is cinched with a thin belt emphasizing the dip in her waist between her full hips and breasts. Her hair is down in a mass of messy waves, and her makeup is subtle but still draws attention to her eyes, which look even more golden now that she’s standing in front of me looking pissed off.
“I’m not messing around with you anymore either. You take me up on my deal, or I’ll call the police and have them escort you off the premises,” I tell her, ignoring the fact I’m getting hard just looking at her.
“This is total crap,” she mumbles, looking around before meeting my eyes again.
“Take it or leave it.”
“Jeez, can I have a second to think?” she cries, and I feel my lips twitch, so I rub my hand down over my mouth to hide it.
“Ten,” I state, watching her eyes narrow. “Nine…eight…seven…” I continue counting, watching as she looks at me like she’s ready to kill me. “Six,” I raise a brow. “Five…”
“Fine!” she yells when I open my mouth to finish my countdown.
“Thought so,” I say triumphantly.
“You’re such a…you’re such a bigasterd,” she growls.
“A what?” I ask, and I can’t help it, I laugh at that one.
“When do I start?” she asks, ignoring my question while red spreads across her cheeks and down her neck.

“Tomorrow. Be here at five, and I’ll show you around the club and tell you your responsibilities.”

Okay, I’m not going to lie here, I’ve been waiting for Sven. He’s was always so mysterious in everyone else’s story. So when we were told his would be coming soon, I was super excited. I couldn’t wait to see the kind of girl who could tame him. I also couldn’t wait to see how he would treat that girl.

I didn’t expect Maggie. She’s a bit of a contradiction, really. One minute she’s feisty and fierce, the next minute you get a glimpse at her insecurities. She’s a persistent little thing, I will say that. I don’t want to give away the story, but there are things about her that surprise me.

So, opening scene, you’re immediately thinking-Sven. Whadda douche!- No joke. But if you’ve been keeping up with the Until series as well as Underground Kings, you know Sven is who he is. He makes no excuses, and he doesn’t have to. That is part of the reason I’ve been dying to get my hands on his story. It was actually quite entertaining to watch him fall in love.

Okay, these two, from the very beginning you can see their chemistry. Of course, with most stories of love, there will be misunderstandings. There will be issues. And that ending….Woah! I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy the Alpha males and their feisty women. Time to see for yourself if these two make it to the over the hurdles finish line.
