Cover Reveal: The Frenchman by Lesley Young & Giveaway

Fleur Smithers rarely veers off the straight and (excruciatingly) narrow. So moving to the seaport town of Toulon to live with her newfound biological mother—an inspector with the French National Police—for one year is a pretty major detour.

Son of France’s crime royalty family and international rugby star, Louis Messette, is devoted to his sport, famille and nothing else. But the saucy American he meets one night changes everything. She sparks a desire in him like no other. Possession takes root. She will do as he commands.

Bit by bit Fleur slips into the Frenchman’s realm of wanton pleasure agreeing to his one condition: that she keep their affair secret. She serves up her heart without reservation in the hub of the glittering Côte d’Azur, and the along the soulful Seine in Paris, unaware of the danger she is in. For her new lover’s “family business” will pit her against her mother, the police woman sworn to bring down the Messettes. And by then, far more than Fleur’s heart will be on the line.

Curious about The Frenchman? Want to know more? Then be sure and sign up to be a part of the blog tour in January! Sign ups are open now.

Review & Giveaway: Captive by Aimee Carter (Blog Tour)

Welcome to our stop on the CAPTIVE by Aimee Carter blog tour, hosted by...

Kismet Book Touring

Originally, I was going to share a video review with you all, but unfortunately I am not that tech savvy, and could not figure out how to upload the video to my computer from my phone. Things were a lot simpler when I had an Apple phone. :-P

Anyway, I am going to share my thoughts on the book, but first -- about the book.

For the past two months, Kitty Doe's life has been a lie. Forced to impersonate the Prime Minister's niece, her frustration grows as her trust in her fake fiancé cracks, her real boyfriend is forbidden and the Blackcoats keep her in the dark more than ever.

But in the midst of discovering that her role in the Hart family may not be as coincidental as she thought, she's accused of treason and is forced to face her greatest fear: Elsewhere. A prison where no one can escape.

As one shocking revelation leads to the next, Kitty learns the hard way that she can trust no one, not even the people she thought were on her side. With her back against the wall, Kitty wants to believe she'll do whatever it takes to support the rebellion she believes in—but is she prepared to pay the ultimate price?

For those who don't know, CAPTIVE is the second book in Aimee Carter's THE BLACKCOAT REBELLION series.

I want to start off by saying that I absolutely loved PAWN. I thought PAWN was amazing, and felt that all the characters were well written, and very likable. It's a 5 STAR book for me. When I got the chance to read CAPTIVE I jumped right at the opportunity because I was dying to know what happens next, and what is Kitty's next move.

CAPTIVE opens up with a bang. Aimee Carter doesn't waste a lot of time recapping book one. She dives right into the story giving you bits and pieces throughout every chapter on book one to help refresh your memory. The story is non-stop from beginning to end. There is plenty of surprising moments, twist, suspense, and betrayal from beginning to end. There is also a lot of O-M-G moments. I literally was at the edge of my seat more than half of the book. Some parts were very predictable, and some left me with my mouth open. That is one of the things I loved most about PAWN, and now about CAPTIVE. I just love how Aimee Carter can make you smile on one page, and the next you're like wait, what?

I do have some slight issues with the book, though.

In PAWN one of the things I loved most about Kitty was her need/want to survive. She would do anything to survive.. Because of that she was a fighter. She did what she had to do, and she thought everything through before taking action. She knew she did not want to live life that was mapped out for her, and she fought for that. But in CAPTIVE, I felt like she still had this want, this need to survive and stay on top, but she was very careless. I don't know if Aimee Carter did this intentionally, but my love for Kitty died a little in this book. This is where the predictable parts of the story play in. Once anyone told Kitty not to do something, and think, she would do the opposite. I literally got so frustrated I was shaking my kindle like if Kitty was standing right in front me. True story (LOL). I just couldn't connect with her in this story as much as I did in the first. Some parts I understood why she did what she did, and then there were parts where I felt could have been avoided had Kitty just sat in a chair peacefully (not literally).

I still have a love for Kitty, but her character definitely changed in CAPTIVE, and I don't know if it was a good thing or bad thing... yet. I will say that I am still planning on continuing the series, and cannot wait for book three. As always, Aimee Carter revealed a secret near the end of the story that I am just dying to know how it plays out in book three.

This is definitely a series I HIGHLY recommend.

3.5 Stars!

About The Aftermath

Sometimes, I dream that I'm someone else.

A girl with dark hair who doesn't worry about hunger or thirst or running from flesh-eaters.

In her world, those sorts of things don't exist.

Since the spring of 2036, when the world changed forever, Claudia and a small clan of survivors have roamed the streets of a very altered Nashville: polluted and desolate, except for the ever-present threat of cannibal Hoarders. Together they must undergo punishing tests of endurance and psychological challenge sometimes with devastating consequences all just to live another day.

With food and water in dwindling supply, and with danger lurking around every corner, no one can be trusted. And as her world starts to make less and less sense, Claudia begins to realize something terrifying: she is just a pawn in some sort of game, and all of her actions are being controlled from afar by a mysterious gamer. So when she meets a maddening and fascinating outsider named Declan, who claims to be a game moderator, she must decide whether to join him in exchange for protection and access to the border.

If they play the game right, they are each other's best hope for survival and a life beyond the only world Claudia's ever known: the terrifying live-action game known as The Aftermath.

ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?

Main Menu

The Story

Our world went to sleep in the spring of 2036, when the sky opened up, releasing asteroids. Releasing blizzards and hailstorms and then a heat wave that blistered the land. Releasing death. When Nashville and her inhabitants awoke hours—maybe even days—later, we were all as good as dead. Our only source of food came from the few factories untouched by the storms—mostly there were protein bars, but sometimes we were fortunate enough to find other food. We prayed for water, for rain.

We hoped for a miracle.

But the cannibals came.

Welcome to The Aftermath.

New Campaign

Continue

Now that you’ve joined up with your clan, it’s time to start collecting weapons. There are a variety of weapons in The Aftermath, some of which that are more difficult to find. Locating the right weapon could mean the difference between life and death, and characters can have no more than two firearms on his person at a time—so choose wisely.

Weapons Inventory

·         Fire Power
o   Handguns: Various models of handguns can be acquired throughout the game—the most readily available being the Tech Arms Limited Edition Aftermath Glock 9mm. Designed by the top weapons manufacturer in the United Provinces, this exclusive Aftermath pistol is a replica of a popular firearm from the same era as the game. Packs a punch and holds a lot of ammo—if you know where to look for an extended magazine. This is the ideal weapon for close quarter combat or suppressive fire.
o   Rifles: A variety of rifles can be acquired but they are more difficult to find than handguns. Most rifles within the world of The Aftermath give gamers the ability to shoot from a greater distance and hit targets through wooden and plaster walls—so it’s no surprise they’re the weapon of choice for the running-gun type of gamer. While rifles give you a significant advantage in a firefight due to their high magazine capacity and faster rate of fire, carrying these weapons and large amounts of ammo will fatigue your character quicker. For the gamer who likes to stalk his prey? Get your hands on a sniper rifle.
o   Grenades: A quick way to eliminate multiple opponents and clear a flesh-eater den, frag grenades are found throughout the game. Want to make a hasty getaway? Drop a smoke grenade—or two.
·         Bladed Weapons
o   Buck Knife: There are multiple types of bladed weapons that can be found in The Aftermath, including throwing knives and swords, but the most popular is your standard buck knife. Medium-sized and lightweight, they’re easy to maneuver during a fight.
o   Machetes: Used for cutting small trees and branches, these long-bladed weapons carry enough whack to get flesh-eaters out your way.
·         Yourself
o   The most readily available weapon in The Aftermath is your own character. This is the weapon you start the game with, and when things get crazy—and you find yourself with no weapon—your character may be your only chance at survival. Kick, punch, knee, and elbow your way out of a flesh-eater den, but remember, hand-to-hand combat is extremely taxing on your character’s HP and endurance. Even when you’re the winner, you’ll always come out damaged. Especially when you’re battling multiple enemies.

Blog Tour: Indelible by Dawn Metcalf - Interview & Giveaway!

Welcome to our stop on the INDELIBLE blog tour hosted by Kismet Blog Tours.

Today we bring you an interview we recently did with author Dawn Metcalf. Enjoy!

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

I am strange and so is my book, Indelible. I am proud of both of us.

When did you realize that you wanted to become a writer? What was the very first thing you ever wrote?

When I could write, age 3-5. The very first thing I wrote were notes to my parents to express how I felt when the words wouldn’t make it out of my mouth. I would scribble notes in crayon, stick them under their door and run away, afraid of standing in the raw emotion of it all. Later I wrote children’s stories and poetry. But the first novel I wrote was a fantasy called “The Eye of the Ancients” which was 365 pages long and took that many days to write! I was 11 years old.

Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?

I do read reviews—masochist that I am—and I know that even not-so-nice ones have a grain of truth to them because it’s how the story resonates (or doesn’t) with a reader. And while I know you can’t please all the people all of the time, I like to hear a different perspective and widen my exposure to who is out there picking up my books (or books like my books). The truth is that it’s frustrating when people misunderstand what I wrote or meant (or, most often, what I thought I wrote/meant) but I can’t do anything about it—even respond or reply or justify myself—because once the book is out there, it’s OUT THERE and has to stand on its own. Everyone has the right to their own beliefs and impressions and I can only try to be truer and more honest to the story and myself.

But I kinda like it when someone says my writing is “unique,” “unusual” or “different” because I like to think I am, too.

How did you come up with the idea of Indelible?

From a rant about how girls are portrayed in young adult literature as needing an older man to show them the way to love. Yyyyyyyeah.

Who is your literary hero?

Oh my gosh, which one?!? I could say Samuel Clemens or Kurt Vonnegut, Spider Robinson or Connie Willis, Neil Gaiman or Laini Taylor, Judy Blume or Phil Foglio…really it depends on what part of the craft we’re talking about.

Do you find it hard to kill off your characters?

No. BWAHAHAHAHAHA! *ahem* Next question.

What's your favorite thing to do when you're not writing?

Karate. Or baking. My life is full of paradoxes.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Creative, empathic & out-of-the-box.

Do you have a book in your house that's just destroyed because you've read it so much?

Yes. Many. Mindkiller by Spider Robinson, Polymorph by Scott Westerfeld, ElfQuest by Wendy & Richard Pini, The Gandalara Cycle by Randall Garrett and Vicki Ann Heydron and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman come to mind, I’ve read them so often!

Who do you most admire?

My parents. I know it’s corny, but it’s true. They are astounding, inspiring, respectful, intelligent and creative folks that walk the talk. Watching them grow up together taught me everything about loving life and the people in it.

Did you set yourself some strict rules while writing?

Yes. Sit down, turn off the internal editor, write. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But, for me, that’s sometimes the hardest thing to do.

If you could bring one of your characters to life, who would it be? And why?

Ooo. Perhaps Invisible Inq because she is just so spunky and sparkly, dangerous and brilliant and I’d like to meet her if only to point her in a direction and watch her wreck havoc, but honestly, the one I’d most like to meet is Graus Claude. He’s amazing.

This is or That

Cat or Dog? Dog. (Oddly enough, I own two cats.)
Ice cream or Sorbet? Ice cream.
Heels or flats? Barefoot!
Knives or sword? Sword. Specifically, broadsword.
Coffee or Tea? Tea. Decaf. Me on caffeine = BAD!
Iced tea or hot tea? Hot!
Snow or rain? Rain.
Movies at home or Movie Theater? At home. (The snacks are better!)
Soda or Juice? Juice, but honestly, I drink water or tea.
Twitter or Facebook? 140 characters or less, baby!
Actual book or eReader? Book. New book smell is an addiction.
Actual book or Audiobook? Actual book unless I’m in the car on a long drive, then audiobook as reading at the wheel would be BAD.
Spring or Summer? Summer.
Fall or winter? Fall.
Long Sleeves or Short Sleeves? Long sleeves. And scarves. And fuzzy fleece…
Young Adult or New Adult? YA All The Way!
Vampires or Werewolves? Hmm. I’d have to say werewolves.
Ghost or Zombies? Ghosts, although I prefer my dead, well, dead.
Action movies or Chick flicks? What are black humor/foreign films?
Horror movies or Mystery movies? Mysteries.

Mountain views or Ocean views? Ocean! Because that means there is a BEACH!

About Indelible...

A young girl’s life is forever changed when she is marked by a mysterious fae boy and drawn into the fantastical and dangerous world of the Twixt in INDELIBLE, the first book in the stunningly powerful The Twixt fantasy series by Dawn Metcalf.

Some things are permanent. Indelible. And they cannot be changed back. Joy Malone learns this the night she sees a stranger with all-black eyes across a crowded room—right before the mystery boy tries to cut out her eye.

Instead, the wound accidentally marks her as property of Indelible Ink, and this dangerous mistake thrusts Joy into an incomprehensible world—a world of monsters at the window, glowing girls on the doorstep and a life that will never be the same.

Now Joy must pretend to be Ink’s chosen one—his helper, his love, his somethingfor the foreseeable future and failure to be convincing means a painful death for them both. Swept into a world of monsters, illusion, immortal honor and revenge, Joy discovers that sometimes there are no mistakes.

Metcalf’s unique style and distinct voice add layers to a complex plot and create a fascinating romance that readers will find unforgettable.

INDELIBLE will be available wherever books are sold and at Harlequin.com.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The role of Dawn Metcalf will be played by the tall brunette in the off-the-shoulder, floor-length leather straitjacket. Makeup by Clinique, buckles by Jada Pinkett Smith, hair by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I’ve been clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humor and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.
