Outcast. Betrayer. Chosen.

After five years being a Fianna, Aisling O’Malley still has to prove herself every day. The sins of the father weigh heavily on her shoulders, and no matter what she does, her fellow warriors regard her as the undeserving one. It doesn’t help that one of the four mythical treasures of Ireland has turned up under her nose, leaving her none the wiser. If by any chance the touted Spear of Lugh up for auction is indeed the legendary Spear of Victory, she needs to get her hands on it before anyone else does—and be spectacular enough about it to make the rest of the Fianna forget she almost missed the artifact in the first place.

Exile. Betrayer. Forgotten.

After spending twice as long undercover as he ever lived at home, Ronan no longer knows where he belongs to or where he’s actually exiled from. He can’t return to his people, not unless he collects the four artifacts of power the Tuatha Dé lost when they were forced to leave Ireland, and three millennia after the fact, he’s pretty sure they’re going to remain lost. Except one of those ancient treasures has landed in his lap—or could land in his lap, if he brings himself to work with the spunky young woman who wants to hire him to consult on the Spear’s authenticity.

Can two broken people learn to trust one another? And even if they can, will it be too late to save Ireland… or themselves?

“If you’re hoping I’ll tell you whether you’re about to bid for a magical spear or not, I should warn you this is a loss of time.”

Aisling waved a hand. “Magical. Legendary. Same thing.”
Ronan shook his head, staring at her profile. “You aren’t very interested in what happens tonight, are you?”
He saw her jaw tighten for a moment. A nerve touched. Before he had time to figure out which one, she grinned.
“If that was an offer, I promise I’m very much interested in what might happen tonight.”
The flirting threw him for a loop. When they had met, he’d accepted it, followed along. But it had all ended when she’d learned he was in fact the professor she was looking to hire and when he’d learned why she wanted to hire him.
Hadn’t it?
“The spear,” he blurted. “The auction, I mean. How do you plan to bid for it?”
“It’s not hard, I’m told. You raise your hand and offer to throw money at whoever is running the show until he gives you what you want.”
“That’s not…” quite what I meant, and that smirk you can barely contain tells me you know it. “There will be many interested bidders, willing to throw a lot of money for the spear, even if it’s a fake.”
“If it’s a fake, we let them. If it isn’t, we outbid them.”
Ronan stared at her again. Off-the-rack suit, beaten car, attitude in spades, and not a lot of class and glam to sugarcoat the package.
“Do you even understand the kind of money we’re talking about?”
Again, that tensing of her jaw. The almost-there smirk wavering. She drove a few moments longer in silence, until Ronan thought she wasn’t planning on answering at all.
“I do,” she confirmed at last.
Then she found a parking spot and killed the engine, conversation over.
It wasn’t the parking lot of Pebbleton’s. It wasn’t the parking lot of anywhere. Just a street, gloomy and not very reputable-looking.
“Where are we?”
“Pebbleton’s is that way.” She pointed. “Two streets over. I don’t want to park on the doorstep.”
Ronan didn’t ask why, although the question burned on his lips. He stepped out of the car and followed her, across a wider street, then around a corner toward an unassuming squat building finished in naked concrete with a gaudy wooden door that wouldn’t have looked out of place in an Edwardian English manor. When they approached the door, a figure peeled from a pool of shadows and cut them off. The man was about as tall as Ronan himself, but twice as burly. He was wearing a tailored suit cut to accommodate his thick arms, and Ronan would bet good money on it being designed to hide a sidearm as well. He greeted them with a quiet grunt, playing every bit the part of intimidating thug.
Aisling reached for the inner pocket of her jacket, the movement putting a tense frown on the guard’s brow, but rather than producing a weapon, she flourished a thick black card embossed in glittering gold.
A pretentious eyesore, and their ticket in.
With a nod, the guard stepped back into the darkness. Aisling resumed her walk, no words exchanged, and Ronan followed close by her side. When they arrived at the monstrosity of a door, it swung open on silent hinges of its own accord.
“Fancy,” Aisling commented as the well-lit foyer came into view. Hardwood floor, crystal chandelier hanging from a ceiling not high enough to support it, a marble statue of a satyr captured mid-prance tucked against the curve of a stairwell. “But kind of…” she trailed off, searching for the right word.
She sounded amused. Ronan was horrified.
“Tacky?” he supplied. “Chintzy? Bawdy? Dowdy?”
“I was going for pretentious,” she said, laughter in her tone. “But I suppose those will do.”

Title: Echoes of Memories
Author: Samantha LaFantasie

Traitor. Liar. That’s what they call me. No one believes me. Not even my team. I know it’s up to me to get the answers. To stop the corruption and unlock my memories. I’ll do anything to get them back. Even if my hands will be covered in blood.

Elsa's every move is scrutinized. She’s labeled a traitor by those she sought for protection, and kept from her family and team. Regaining memories has been a slow process. Too slow for the Council's liking, taking matters into their own hands.

The new captain has history with Elsa and operates with a hidden agenda. Even Elsa’s team reacts differently toward her. If only she could unlock her memories. Everything is playing right into Alexander's hand, even amassing an army with unconventional methods, designed to annihilate the Nepherium—starting with Noah. Character Interview
Elsabetha Ehlers

What is your favorite food?
Mac and Cheese. I love me some cheesy pasta. Not to mention that it’s quick and easy. Though, I did love my mom’s casserole. That was good. I just don’t prefer the memory that accompanies it.

Do you hope to have children some day?
At this point in my life, there would be no way I could take care of a child. It’s a lot of responsibility and my job doesn’t really allow for much of a life. Though, I have thought about it. I’m not sure I’d make a good mom. I’m too much of a soldier, I think. But who knows? Maybe it will happen and my whole world will shift. I’m pretty happy where I’m at right now, though. And even if I was ready to bring a child into the world, right now wouldn’t be a very good time.

Have you remembered anything you wished wasn’t true?
Oh yes. Lots of things, but that’s what happens in my line of work. Things happen, mistakes are made, and once those things are done, there’s nothing that can undo them. Sometimes, I wonder if it was better to never remember anything at all. Because it’s not so much the memories I wished I hadn’t remembered or wished weren’t true that bothers me the most. It’s the ones I don’t remember. That constant gapping black hole of the unknown lurking above my head and the constant pressure to remember everything.

If you could create a memory, and it would have really happened, what memory would you create?
Most definitely my father still being alive, having got out of Alexander’s home like the rest of us, and he and I having maintained the relationship that I remembered from childhood. His loss is the most profound so far and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t regret not doing something different, or doing something more to save him.

What do you think of the adage "forgive and forget"?
Whoever came up with that obviously doesn’t know what it’s like to actually forget. Though I’m sure it’s connotation applies to sinning or wrongdoing against humankind, I still beg to differ. I think it’s far better to forgive, and always remember that lesson or event, than to forget and risk history repeating itself.

Have you ever seen Star Wars?
Actually, I have! My father had a friend who was really into preserving classic movies from centuries ago. It’s funny to see what human’s ideals of space and aliens were of the time. And it’s a great story of triumph, love and loss, good vs. evil. I think the light sabers ended up as a basis for the design of plasma swords.

Do you ever wear makeup?
When the occasion calls for it. But I don’t wear a ton. Just a little foundation, shadow, and whatnot. I’m not really big into stuff like that.

What is your go-to hairstyle for day-to-day living?
I pretty much have just two hairstyles: either down, flowing freely over my shoulders, or pulled back at the nape of my neck. I like to keep things simple. I don’t wear hair products either.

Who taught you how to fight? (If you remember)
I don’t actually remember a specific “who” but I do know that I learned at the Academy. Actually, my team helped me hone most of my skills.

They say some things you never forget. Like how to ride a bike or how to breathe. What is something you never forget?
Hmm… If it’s in the respect of skills, how to fight. Fighting and training created a lot of muscle memory. Now, if I’d just not second-guess myself and prevent myself from reacting to everything, it would be a different story. Sadly, I’m under the microscope so much I’m almost paranoid to do anything except for train.

Have you ever remembered something incorrectly? If so, were they any repercussions to those false memories?
I’m not sure that I remembered something incorrectly so much as mixed up what I did remember. If that makes sense. Like maybe I didn’t have it completely right before I lost my memories. As far as repercussions? Considering the position I found myself in and the way I appear as a traitor, I think there was some, maybe not directly seen or felt on me. Let’s face it, if I had remembered everything when I was supposed to, I could actually answer for all the events that had happened. Too bad I don’t have that luxury.

What is one memory you wish you never lost in the first place?
Just one? I don’t know if anyone in my position could ever narrow down their entire missing life to just one specific memory that they wished they had never lost. But for what it’s worth, I wish I never forgot what I was going to Tartarus for. I imagine that would’ve saved me a lot of grief and heartache.

What is one memory you wish you didn't have?
If it could be one that happened after I woke up with missing memories, then it would be the way my father looked at me when he saw the pendant on my necklace that night during dinner.

Five Reasons You Should be Reading LGBT Novels
By: J.H. Trumble

It’s so 21st Century

Gay characters in novels is nothing new, but I’m seeing them in an increasing number of leading roles. That’s exciting. Check out Brigid Kemmerer’s Secret (the fourth novel in her Elementals series) and Benjamin Alire Saenz’s award-winning Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, just two of my recent favorites. I think LGBT characters in leading roles will be the next big thing!

You get to live inside someone else’s skin

One of the great takeaways from reading books is that we get to walk a mile or a hundred in someone else’s shoes. And often what we find is that characters who seem to have nothing in common with us, are really, in many ways just like us. They bleed when you cut them, they bristle when they’re marginalized, they fight back when they’re wronged. It’s hard to hate or even mock someone you identify with, someone you’ve cried with, laughed with, and maybe even fallen in love with.

They reflect the diversity that exists

If you think queer folk aren’t among us, you’ve been living under a rock. And this is from someone who lives in a very conservative pocket of Texas. And yet books with LGBT characters in leading roles struggle more to find a place on school library shelves than do their straight counterparts. If your school or public library has a strong LGBT collection, go hug your librarian! Diversity is a beautiful thing and should be celebrated!

They explore stereotypes

My good friend author James Howe once told me that stereotypes exist for a reason—there’s a lot of truth in them. I would have to agree with him on that. But stereotypes are not the total truth. If your understanding of the LGBT community is limited to stereotypes, then you’re missing out on the incredible diversity within that community. Books are a great way to explore what it means to be human first and gay second.

Five Reasons You Should be Reading LGBT Novels
By: J.H. Trumble

There are some damn good stories out there

If you shy away from LGBT novels because you’re not gay, then you’re really missing out on some great stories. Here is a list of some of my favorites in no particular order:

Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List, by David Levithan Secret, by Brigid Kemmerer Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, by Benjamin Alire Saenz The Last Exit to Normal, by Michael Harmon Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You, by Peter Cameron Gone, Gone, Gone and Marco Impossible, by Hannah Moskowitz The Vast Fields of Ordinary, by Nick Burd

And of course, my novels—Don’t Let Me Go, Where You Are, and my September 26 release, Just Between Us! Read LGBT novels! Talk about them, review them, share them with your friends, ask your librarian to purchase them.

Interview w/ author of Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas (Blog Tour)

Tour Schedule

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Retta Heikkinen knows the unspoken rule of society: love between androids and humans is forbidden. A simple enough edict until Hemingway Koskinen spends an evening charming her with his intense gaze, bewitching smile, and sparkling conversation that hints at so much more than the usual obsessions of high school boys. Rules were meant to be cast aside, especially when love beckons.

If only it were as simple as being in love.

Trouble is brewing, not just for Hemingway--for all androids. Secrets have been kept, lies propagated, and Retta soon discovers that a frightening future awaits thousands of androids if she doesn’t do something to stop it. Worse yet, she will lose the one love she’s ever endangered herself for: Hemingway.

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

My name is Nicole Grotepas and in addition to my husband and son, I have four sisters,
two step-sisters, and a step brother. My mom, dad, and step-dad love books. I was raised
in a home that was filled to the brim with books. I was never lonely because I always
had a book to read or a sister to bug. Blue Hearts of Mars is a YA sci-fi romance that I
dedicated to my dads because they're the ones who loved science fiction. My mom can't
stand it, but she's the only reason I read books in the first place. The book, Blue Hearts of
Mars, is about love and equality and overcoming the fear of the other.

Who is your literary hero?

Tie between Jane Eyre and Ender Wiggin! They both have a strong moral code and
they honor it. Jane wavers, but she never gives in, and would rather be homeless than
compromise her integrity. Ender spends his life trying to make restitution for his mistakes
and I just think that's sadly beautiful.

If you could choose one book cover to put on your wall as a poster, what would it
be?

I know you're thinking I would pick one of those old Harlequin Romances with Fabio
on the cover, but you'd wrong. So wrong. I'd totally go with the last Robert Jordan
book, "Memory of Light," which was finished by Brandon Sanderson. Finally! The cover
fits the content of the book!

Do you find it hard to kill off your characters?

Yes, but I'm going to do it someday. I swear. So help me. My dad is actually bugging me
about that. And he's right. I have been known to criticize other authors who don't do that.
Must. Kill. A. Character.

Who do you most admire?

My mother and sisters. All of my family, really.

What are you working on now?

A book that's based partially on my favorite Greek myth. I've written the ending already
and it's going to blow minds. It's blown mine. OK, I'd say more about it being mind-
blowing, but I don't want to set expectations too high. I'm also planning a novella to
complement Blue Hearts of Mars. We'll see if there's enough demand for that. People
seem to want a sequel, so I'm also considering that.

What do you need to set the mood for you to write?

Usually appropriate music. I also try to clear my mind before I plunge in. If I know what
my scene will have in it, I can do that easier and don't have to reread previous scenes to
get into the mood. I think the mind clearing aspect is very Zen, but I wouldn't have said
or thought that till this moment.

Author Nicole Grotepas

Nicole wrote her first fantasy novel in 7th grade on her mother's old Brother typewriter. It was never finished but it strongly resembled a Dragonlance plot and she's forever wondered what happened to the manuscript and Tonathan--the handsome elven protagonist. After living in Nashville where she worked as an editor, she returned to the Utah desert where she was raised. Nicole now lives near the Wasatch mountains with her husband. She writes and raises her son and three cats full time.
