Review: The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty!

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Series: The Daevabad Trilogy #1
Publication: November 14th, 2017

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass--a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for . . .

The City of Brass left me more torn than any book I can (currently) recall. There were things about it that I absolutely adored, and other things that were just...meh.

Let's start with the cover. Let's just take a moment to look at it. Soooo pretty...*pets cover*. And you know what? Not only is it gorgeous, but it encapsulates this setting with absolute perfection. My favorite part of The City of Brass was easily the world-building, as Chakraborty creates her scenes so well you feel like you're living there. Outstanding.

I also really liked the characters, and thought the author did a great job making them real. I wasn't crazy about the romance, and I think part of that is the fact that I still have no idea who we can trust, and I don't think that was unintentional. Since The City of Brass is the first of a trilogy I'm sure there will be plenty of answers to come.

Now what I didn't like...which is kind of difficult to explain. In a way I guess I feel like The City of Brass felt like Season 1 of an ongoing television show. A lot happened, and I can remember these scenes vividly so I don't want to say I was bored. But the entire time I had this feeling like...what are we working toward? And then once we hit what was supposed to be the climax, I thought, that's it? Seriously? This book is long, and it all just felt very anti-climactic. Like, hey, tune in next season! Not only anti-climactic, but I felt a bit blindsided by what did happen. I can rave all day about the writing, the world-building, and the characters, but I couldn't really sum up this book for you. It just feels...incomplete. Again, hard to explain. :)

Step into The City of Brass, the spellbinding debut from S. A. Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and One Thousand and One Nights, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. Taken from an unfinished copy (ARC). Not Final.

Nahri glanced back at the Euphrates. Somewhere across the river, across deserts vaster than seas, was Cairo, the only home she'd ever known. A hard place but familiar and predictable - completely unlike the future Dara offered.
"Or follow me," he continued, his voice smooth. Too smooth. "Find out what you really are, what really exists in this world. Come to Daevabad where even a drop of Nahid blood will bring you honor and wealth beyond your imagining. Your own infirmary, the knowledge of a thousand previous healers at your fingertips. Respect."

     Dara offered his hand.

Now, Meriden is about to journey across the sea to understand her family history.

I tumble onto grass. A weight slams into my back, smashing the air from my chest.
And then the world explodes.
Frantically, I cover my head. Debris scatters over me and I cringe under the assault. I can’t hear. My ears ring from the blast of whatever the hell was just destroyed.
The bombardment ends almost as quickly as it began. The weight on me disappears. My lungs labor hard to draw in air while sound comes to me thick and muffled like my head is wrapped in cotton. It seems as if someone is shouting. I can’t make sense of the words.
Choking with my effort to breathe, I roll over, searching for Amar.
And I find him. He’s surrounded. Six guys with knives circle him. We’re in the middle of a park not far from my apartment and up ahead, a tree looks like it’s been hit with a grenade. Orange flames climb from the shattered trunk. Smoke blurs the streetlights casting cold light on the grass.
I rush to my feet, woodchips falling from my clothes and skin. “Amar!”
Two of the guys feint toward him. They slash at him with their knives like they want to tear him apart. I can’t see any magic on Amar yet, no blue glow or faint crackle of electricity, but when he twitches back, the ones who are now nearest to him pull away, as if even with their knives, they’re scared of getting too close.
Cait, run!”
I don’t move. I’m not leaving him here. “Get the hell away from him!”
No one listens. The ones around Amar don’t even blink.
But two of them break off from the group and charge toward me.
I backpedal on the slick grass. A strange sensation pulses through me, like all the air around me rushes toward my body and then bursts away.
I remember the feeling. It’s what happened in the alley outside Goa Cafe.
The men stagger. One of them falls.
And the second lunges at me. His hands grab my arms. His weight tears me down. I tumble to the ground and he comes with me.
My fingers claw at the grass while I struggle to drag myself away. He reaches out quickly, snagging my shirt. His other hand grabs my shoulder and hauls me back to the dirt and grass.
“Stay still, bitch.” He places his knife to my neck. “You’re no good to the Guardians in pieces.”

The Vanishing Girl (The Vanishing Girl #1)
By Laura Thalassa

Every night after Ember Pierce falls asleep, she disappears. She can teleport anywhere in the world—London, Paris, her crush’s bedroom—wherever her dreams lead her. Ten minutes is all she gets, and once time’s up, she returns to her bed. It's a secret she’s successfully kept for the last five years. But now someone knows.

A week after her eighteenth birthday, when frustratingly handsome Caden Hawthorne captures her, delivers her to the government, and then disappears before her eyes, Ember realizes two things: One, she is not alone. And two, people like her—teleporters—are being used as weapons.

Dragged off to a remote facility where others like her live, Ember’s forced to pair up with her former captor, Caden, to learn how to survive inside until she can escape. Only Caden’s making escape seem less and less appealing.

But even as Ember falls for the boy who got her into this mess, she knows that she is running out of time. Because the government has plans for those like her, and those plans might just cost Ember her life.

Okay, so this book is kind of crazy. Ember is an experiment, essentially. She's a young girl who has special abilities and she had no idea she wasn't the only one until the day the government came knocking on her door. She's then taken away from her family and whisked off to a secret facility.

I just want to say real quick that I can't really believe what the government is making these kids do. Like, these are teenagers. They're still kids. They're being sent into dangerous situations with no regard for their young lives. I mean, actually, I guess I can believe what the government is making them do. I'm not sure if this book was supposed to be a metaphor, but that's how I related to it, personally. But that's just me. You may get something completely different out of it than I did.

I also think, on some level that The Vanishing girl could be classified as a YA, or possibly coming of age. I kind of veered away from thinking of it as a YA because there is sex in it. I liked this story. I kind of had to put it out of my mind that these were just kids. It wasn't hard, the author did well in not always reminding us that these were just teenagers, though it was right at the back of my mind throughout the story. Of course they are mature. They have to be. They have to learn how to navigate very adult situations. So there is a bit of action in the book.

The story ends on a huge cliffhanger. I don't mind a cliffhanger, especially since I'm a series reader. I know they're just par for the course, but I wanted to make that clear. If you don't mind a cliffy, and you're one of the people who don't mind buying another book to finish a good story, I'd recommend The Vanishing Girl. If you're a cliffy hater, maybe skip this one. But personally, I'm going to get myself the second book asap.

Demons are real.
And now I’m one of them.

I never expected my boring, regular life to change on a night out with my best friend. I only thought I was going to celebrate her birthday at a local club, not end up in a hospital after witnessing supernatural events that couldn’t possibly be real.

Talk about being wrong.

Now I’ve drawn the attention of the most dangerous forces in the demon world. I’m being stalked by a guy who can be in multiple places at once. I’m overwhelmed by a hunger I can’t shake—an impossible hunger that compels me to feed off the sexual energy of others, even if it might make me kill somebody. I’m losing control and entering a secret world that exists in the shadows of my own—a world filled with vampires, werewolves, and demons who look just like anyone else.

The night was supposed to be simple. Normal. After all, I thought I was human and my life thus far has been unbelievably ordinary.

Now it’s anything but.

Originally released as three novellas—Touch Me: Part One, Touch Me: Part Two, and Touch Me: Part Three.

Excerpt

Dark eyes meet mine.

Everything slows, like the world melts into molasses and in it, I’m stuck. A guy stands in front of me, his body only inches away, and suddenly, he’s the only one in the room. The dancers fade into shadows and mist. The music is the low thrum that underscores the world. And there’s just him. Black skin, dark as I’ve ever seen. Sculpted arms hinting at a strong body, as if everything of him is muscle and sinew. He’s about my age, at least six-foot-two, and easily the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. And he smiles like he knows me. Like he’s saying hello.

His hand reaches out. Brushes a shadow, a girl, and shimmering mist ghosts away from her to caress his arm like a lover. His smile broadens.

The mist absorbs into his skin.

He nods to me, still friendly. Still like we’re acquaintances who’ve simply run into one another on the street. And then he’s gone into the shadows and the crowd comes rushing back again.

Excerpt

Amar is studying me. His hand moves, taking my own carefully like he’s afraid I’ll pull away. And I freeze. The look in his eyes… it’s like I’m all he sees. Me, now. Me, then, back in that restroom, alone in the moments before Ruby walked in. But there’s no pity in his gaze. Just something else, dark and deep.
          Safety.
I can’t breathe. My thoughts are trying to catch up to my impressions, struggling to put words to a man so unfathomable it should be funny. I don’t know what he wants, though. To kiss me? To have sex? Somewhere inside, I’m still ready for that, but that part of me feels like it’s drowning in the nightmare of this evening, the exhaustion of all the hours since, and the rawness of what I’ve just said.
He lifts his other hand, taking my cheek, and his thumb strays across my lips, parting them while his eyes track the motion. My heart slams into my ribs. Even the simple contact makes my insides start to burn. Maybe I’m drowning in all this madness.
Maybe I just need something good to hang onto.
