Review: Raised in Fire by K.F. Breene

Title: Raised in Fire (Fire and Ice Trilogy #2)
Author: K.F. Breene
Published: May 16, 2017 (Kindle edition, 432 pages)
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Goodreads | Amazon

It is a common truth in my life that when it rains, it pours.

The killings that once plagued New Orleans are cropping up again in Seattle. The local office is stumped. I’m called out to lend a fresh set of eyes, and my unique magical touch.

It’s only when I get there that I realize the Seattle office isn’t stumped at all.

They’re being silenced by the Mages’ Guild, a corrupt magical institution that doesn't want word to get out of what is plaguing the city. Worse, news of my magic might’ve slipped down to the underworld, hitting the ears of some extremely powerful demons.

What I thought was a routine murder investigation turns into a fight for my life. With the help of Darius, my stalker elder vampire, and my dual-mage side kicks, I somehow have to dodge the Guild in order to stop one of the most powerful demons I’ve ever encountered. If I don’t? It’ll escape back down below with proof of what I really am.

My life hangs in the balance, and this time, I can't see a way out.

As you've probably realized, I'm a pretty big K.f. Breene fan. I love her story lines, and her fierce and feisty heroines. Reagan is no exception. And with the third and final book in the trilogy coming out in just a little more than a month, I figured I had better get on writing this review.

When Raised in Fire starts, we learn that someone has been talk talk talking, and news of Reagan's possible parentage and abilities has made its way to the underworld. We meet Agnon, who is referred to as an it, but let's be honest...he's a legit demon. And this guy brings calls an aswang. I put it in italics, because that's what you do. I had to look up what an aswang even was. Now, there are lots of variations of what an aswang is but the gist of it is: An Aswang is a shapeshifting monster in Filipino folklore. And take a gander at these creeps.

Freaky, am I right? The aswang was seriously just a small part of the story, but since I think cryptid's are AWESOME, I just had to talk about it.

Okay, moving on. So there's some strange murdering going on in Seattle, and Reagan is sent that way to check it out. And since Darius is a little bit stalky, he makes sure to be there with her. There is a little bit of bow chicka wow wow in this part of the story. But trust me, Reagan makes him work for it. I find it a lot of fun that Darius thinks Reagan is perfect, and she's just like-Dude. Stop it. Relax. She's not buying the bs.

There is quite a lot of action in this part of the story. Of course, Reagan is keeping secrets, because she has to. Some people find out, some people don't. Some suspicions are confirmed, some are denied. Things like that. I imagine Reagan is not going to be able to hide forever, though. Her father is bound to find out that she exists. Guess we'll have to wait until the next book to see what happens with that.

I tumble onto grass. A weight slams into my back, smashing the air from my chest.
And then the world explodes.
Frantically, I cover my head. Debris scatters over me and I cringe under the assault. I can’t hear. My ears ring from the blast of whatever the hell was just destroyed.
The bombardment ends almost as quickly as it began. The weight on me disappears. My lungs labor hard to draw in air while sound comes to me thick and muffled like my head is wrapped in cotton. It seems as if someone is shouting. I can’t make sense of the words.
Choking with my effort to breathe, I roll over, searching for Amar.
And I find him. He’s surrounded. Six guys with knives circle him. We’re in the middle of a park not far from my apartment and up ahead, a tree looks like it’s been hit with a grenade. Orange flames climb from the shattered trunk. Smoke blurs the streetlights casting cold light on the grass.
I rush to my feet, woodchips falling from my clothes and skin. “Amar!”
Two of the guys feint toward him. They slash at him with their knives like they want to tear him apart. I can’t see any magic on Amar yet, no blue glow or faint crackle of electricity, but when he twitches back, the ones who are now nearest to him pull away, as if even with their knives, they’re scared of getting too close.
Cait, run!”
I don’t move. I’m not leaving him here. “Get the hell away from him!”
No one listens. The ones around Amar don’t even blink.
But two of them break off from the group and charge toward me.
I backpedal on the slick grass. A strange sensation pulses through me, like all the air around me rushes toward my body and then bursts away.
I remember the feeling. It’s what happened in the alley outside Goa Cafe.
The men stagger. One of them falls.
And the second lunges at me. His hands grab my arms. His weight tears me down. I tumble to the ground and he comes with me.
My fingers claw at the grass while I struggle to drag myself away. He reaches out quickly, snagging my shirt. His other hand grabs my shoulder and hauls me back to the dirt and grass.
“Stay still, bitch.” He places his knife to my neck. “You’re no good to the Guardians in pieces.”

Cover Reveal/Teaser Tuesday: BLOODBOUND by Amalie Howard!

Hardcover, 384 pages
Expected publication: March

Love or freedom…the choice is hers.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA, 1892. Lady Leandra Von Kurzberg is a hellion. Raised with seven older brothers, there is only one thing Lena fears: marriage. She has no desire to give up her freedom to be any lord’s broodmare.

When Lena meets the dangerously attractive Devereux twins, she is smitten. Inexplicably drawn to both men, the brothers are polar opposites—as much as Christian is every inch the debonair Duke of D’Avigny, his brother Lucian is a roguish scoundrel bent on hedonism.

But the captivating twins aren’t what they seem…

As frightening truths are unveiled and a one-of-a-kind offer is made, Lena will have to decide whether love is worth the loss of her freedom, or if freedom is worth the ultimate cost…her life.

Lena bit her lip as Arabella shot her a naughty wink and ambled off to meet Fabian who had moved to the far side of the room. He handed his blades to the waiting footmen before receiving her. Lena stood, rooted to the spot as Lucian approached after greeting her brother. She half wished she wasn’t wearing a ratty pair of breeches that looked as if they’d been trampled by a herd of angry elephants.
“Wagner said you would be down here,” Lucian said. “And Arabella who arrived at the same time offered to show me the way.” He paused, his eyes drifting closed for a scant second, a sublime look crossing his face. “You smell…delicious.”
Lena couldn’t help it—she laughed. “You do say the oddest things, my lord. And I assure you, I am as sweaty as a sheep on a hot summer day.”
“Do sheep get sweaty?” he asked without missing a beat.
“One can imagine they would under all that wool.”
“I suppose,” he said and leaned in slightly as if to scent her. Her pulse soared and Lena fought the urge to move back a step, not because she was afraid, but out of some sudden desire for sheer self-preservation. While Christian had been reserved, she was certain that this brother did not hold himself to the same code. No, Lucian took. He was a man who sought pleasure wherever it was for the taking. It didn’t matter that her brother stood a few feet away, despite being distracted. “Sheep aside, your perfume is delightful.”
“Soap and sweat, my lord.” She expelled a shallow breath. “Nothing more.”
“The purest essence of woman.”
“Why are you here?” she asked, blushing. He made those five words sound like something dirty. She was grateful that Fabian and Arabella were both out of earshot.
Lucian bowed with a flourish. “Why, to prove myself, of course. And what better way than to allow a capable woman the chance to slit my throat.”
“You wish to die, Lord Devereux?”
An unfathomable expression crossed his face, but it was soon eclipsed by a brilliant smile. “Alas, my extraordinary skills preclude that very outcome.”
“Confident, are we?” Lena said and raised her blades. “You do realize that I could defeat you blindfolded.”
Lucian’s gray eyes widened. “Is that a challenge?”
“Only if you want it to be.”
Their clash of wills was interrupted by Fabian and Arabella who announced that they were going to take a stroll in the gardens. Lena rolled her eyes at the bright blush that covered Arabella’s cheeks. An evening stroll was just another way of saying that they were going to do what engaged couples did in secluded gardens. Kissing and whatnot. An unexpected spurt of envy curled through her. Perhaps Lord Devereux would also welcome such a stroll. She slid a glance to him, noting the dissolute turn of his mouth and revised her earlier desire. A stroll in the garden with this man would involve nothing less than complete and utter ruination.

Note from the author about Rebirth, the Altered Fate series, and the continuation of the Awakened Fate series...

Since the release of Become: Book Five of the Awakened Fate series, I've been discussing off-and-on the topic of the Altered Fate series, which was to be a spinoff story that took place after the events of Become. In working on it, however, it became apparent that the plot was too closely linked to the rest of the Awakened Fate series for the story to be truly considered a spinoff.
I consulted my beta-readers and my assistant and they all agreed. The stories need to be part of the same series. The stories are the same series.
So that's why the books of the Altered Fate series have instead become the next books of the Awakened Fate series. I hope you enjoy them!

Excerpt

A shape moved in the shadows at the corner of my eye.
My breath caught and my gaze snapped toward the motion. Large, scraggly bushes met my eyes, the green shapes almost black in the darkness. The wind shifted the branches, and my brow drew down at the sight. I’d seen something else, though. At least, I thought I had.
Something slammed into me, driving me backward off of the rock. Branches snapped on the bush behind me as I fell into it, but the weight shoving at me didn’t leave.
A hand clamped over my mouth. A figure held me down—big and heavy and almost certainly male, although his face was lost in the shadows and his body was a black shape in the night. An armband wrapped his muscular bicep, the black fabric stitched with glistening blue threads that picked out the shape of a mountain. Brambles stabbed into my back when he pressed me down. I shouted behind his hand, struggling to break free.
But he was strong. So strong. His other arm rose as if to hit me. I gasped, instinctively drawing on the magic stored in my ring, cursing how it was always so slow.
Long blades like translucent knives grew from the back of his forearm.
My eyes went wide. A dehaian. One of those spiky-armed mermaid creatures that never, ever bothered us because they didn’t even know we existed.
He swung the blades at me. My magic couldn’t respond fast enough.

Series: Book One of the Demon Guardians Series
Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Wildflower Isle
Publication Date: September 16, 2016
Cover Artist: Karri Klawiter

Demons are real.
And now I’m one of them.

I never expected my boring, regular life to change on a night out with my best friend. I only thought I was going to celebrate her birthday at a local club, not end up in a hospital after witnessing supernatural events that couldn’t possibly be real.

Talk about being wrong.

Now I’ve drawn the attention of the most dangerous forces in the demon world. I’m being stalked by a guy who can be in multiple places at once. I’m overwhelmed by a hunger I can’t shake—an impossible hunger that compels me to feed off the sexual energy of others, even if it might make me kill somebody. I’m losing control and entering a secret world that exists in the shadows of my own—a world filled with vampires, werewolves, and demons who look just like anyone else.

The night was supposed to be simple. Normal. After all, I thought I was human and my life thus far has been unbelievably ordinary.

Now it’s anything but.

Excerpt

Dark eyes meet mine.

Everything slows, like the world melts into molasses and in it, I’m stuck. A guy stands in front of me, his body only inches away, and suddenly, he’s the only one in the room. The dancers fade into shadows and mist. The music is the low thrum that underscores the world. And there’s just him. Black skin, dark as I’ve ever seen. Sculpted arms hinting at a strong body, as if everything of him is muscle and sinew. He’s about my age, at least six-foot-two, and easily the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. And he smiles like he knows me. Like he’s saying hello.

His hand reaches out. Brushes a shadow, a girl, and shimmering mist ghosts away from her to caress his arm like a lover. His smile broadens.

The mist absorbs into his skin.

He nods to me, still friendly. Still like we’re acquaintances who’ve simply run into one another on the street. And then he’s gone into the shadows and the crowd comes rushing back again.
