Review: Fade to Black by Morgan Kearns

Fade to Black is a tempestuous and witty love story, complete with dangerous twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very last page. Kate Callahan is a news reporter in Salt Lake City whose life seems to be perfect. Her attentive boyfriend, Jesse Vasquez, is determined to prove his love for her. But the day she steps through the doors of KHB as their newest reporter and meets photographer Rich Spencer, everything changes. There is something about the way he caresses her with his eyes, speaks to her without saying a word, and lights her skin aflame with a simple touch that makes her rethink everything she’s ever known. Ultimately, she is faced with an impossible choice—one that tears her heart in two—which becomes excruciating when fate steps in and decides for her. Walking along a mountain of heartache and regret, Kate struggles to find a world where love does conquer all.

Review:
This book was sooooo good! And the author of this book is such a sweetheart. I got in contact with her through Facebook and Twitter she was so sweet. She requested I kept her informed on my reading progress. Now I must say that I read this book in less than a week. It probably would have been less than a week but I had my son at home, demanding my time and attention. But once I opened this book I literally had a hard time putting it down. And if I were sitting when I read, it would have had me at the edge of my seat. That's how good it was. Picked it up and was hooked from Day 1.

In this book, you get all sorts of characters with different personalities. And you'll like all of them. But most of all you have Kate and Richard. So in book you have all kinda of character. From the time they met they had chemistry. You immediately was drawn to them. But I was also drawn to Jesse, Kate's boyfriend. How can you choose between two wonderful and sexy guys? I know if "I" were in that situation, I wouldn't know who to choose. The one I've loved my whole life or the one that sets me on fire by touching my skin. And she just couldn't decide until their was only one standing. But that still wasn't enough to make her understand "He" was the one for her.

This book was amazing! From beginning to end! 5 out 5 stars and a MUST read. A definite GOOD CHOICE for READING!!

Blogoversary Day Four: All about Wanda & Giveaway!

First off I'd like to say that I'm so happy that I'm a part of this blog. When Damaris came to me with this idea, I said "Let's do it!" and it turned out to be one of the best decisions ever! I can not be happier at the path this blog has taken. I've made so many friends and have come across so many wonderful authors. So on that note I'd like to thank a few people.

I love to thank Lakisha Speltzer. She send us a review for her book "Werelove: Dusk Conspiracy" in which I fell in love with it (Review Here) and later on we continued talking and we built a friendship. I am now her BETA reader! And I couldn't be more happier.

I also want to thank some other people. People I became friends with and authors I've come to know and love. Authors who take their time out and talk to their readers and basically treat us with respect while others don't.

                               1. Susan Mallery. Our own GCR Damaris is her head cheerleader for her Fool's Gold Series and she basically became one of ours. Always showing support and reminding us how great we doing.
                               2. Kristi Cook, author of YA popular book called "Haven". We love you Kristi. No other words can express how sweet you are.
                               3. Meagan Hatfield, she was one of the first authors that embraced us when we ranted and raved about her book. She's a true sweetheart.
                               4. Morgan Kearns, she contacted GCR for a review of her book "Fade To Black" and another book I fell in love with. I stayed in contact with her since. And she even written another book which was just a great. She supported all our giveaways with a charm.
                               5. Then there's Margie Church, she's from Noble Romance Publishing. Her vampire erotica is unbelievable which is called "Love Bites". It's amazing! She's always been patient and supportive towards my own desire to be a writer.
                               6. Last but not least, Raquel (Skyla11377), always there to chit chat with about books or if I wanted to rant and rave about something or just help learn something new on blogger. Ty girl!

Now here's a few random fun facts about me:

(I figured since you guys know me as an adult, here's me as a child.)

1. What is your biggest pet peeve?
I'm with Damaris on this one. I hate having to wait on people. Whether it's meeting somewhere or waiting for them to do something. I have very little patience so for that I would rather do it myself. I have issues with that.

2. When you are at the grocery store, do you ask for paper or plastic?
I'm one of those annoying people that would rather have paper. Don't double bag my bag either and stuff as much as you can into ONE bag. Or I'm the one with my own recyclable bags. I'm an earth friendly kinda gal.

3. Do you talk in your sleep?
I think when I was younger I did. But not now. Although my boyfriend talks in his sleep now! And I tend to listen extra closely at what he has to say. One time he said in his sleep "I accept your apology" I just laughed because someone must have done something in his dream to upset him. I wonder if I were to ask him something like he's talking, if he would answer? What do you think?

4. Have you ever locked yourself out of the house?
So when I was a teenager I was staying at my sister's house in Ohio and she locked the keys in. Being that I was the younger and skinnier person at the time. I had to crawl into the bathroom tiny window to get into the house. Highlight of my vacation. Wish I could pull that off now. If I were to try that now, I'll throw my back.

5. Would you give someone else a gift that had been given to you?
Okay, now this may be wrong. But I am the Queen of re-gifting. If someone were to give me something I don't like I feel bad that I don't use it so I would most likely give it away. Sorry. No sense in letting it collect dust.

6. If you won a $5,000 shopping spree to any store, which store would you pick?
OMG!! Call me cheesy! But I'll spend $5,000 in Bed, Bath and Beyond! I can go in that store and spend money I never planned on spending! I LOOOOOOVEEEE that store!

So are you ready for my giveaways? Here they are! These are three of my favorite of our blog year and you have your chance to win them. They are all from 3 fantastic indy authors and the winners will receive autograph copies directly from the authors themselves. Unfortunately this giveaway is only for US residents. Sorry =( But before you guys pick the ones you want to win. I have to say that the sweet "Morgan Kearns" is throwing in her second book called "In it to win it" as a bonus! How sweet is she? So let's give a thanks to Morgan for throwing in that freebie. So "Fade to Black & In it to win it" is a package deal.

#AADNOLA Author Spotlight: Shayla Black!

1. When you decided to become a writer, what made you chose to write Erotica and Romance?

I chose erotic romance because I’d always written steamy, even before erotic romance was in vogue and I loved the genre. More passion, more drama, more of everything I love about a good romance. I don’t like closed doors and fades to black. As a reader, I like to be completely a part of the experience, not left guessing what’s happening between the characters I’ve come to like. If I’ve chosen to invest emotionally in these people, I want to be up to my neck in whatever they’re feeling. To me, this sort of read is very honest and real. In our own lives, we don’t fade to black when we hit the bedroom door.

2. You write Historical, Erotica, and Paranormal, do you ever find that you have trouble with an inspiration?

Actually, I write erotic romance, not erotica. There’s a difference. Erotica is one person’s journey to fulfillment or self-actualization through a sexual exploration, often with multiple and/or random partners. Erotic romance is the story of a developing relationship between two (or more) people that ends with a happily-ever-after. That said, the short answer to your question is no. There’s inspiration everywhere, all around us in everyday life. Music, photos, the news, even people-watching at the mall can provide me a spark of an idea. I’ve written entire books that stemmed from each of these. Life should be inspirational. You just have to look around. If anything, I have way more stories than I actually have time to tell.

3. I noticed that the Doomsday Brethren series is self-published, why did you decide to go that route?

After four books and a novella, I bought my way out of the last contract because I wanted more creative freedom over the series, which included everything from the direction of future stories to the packaging of the books. There were other business reasons, and my time became such that I was unable to write this book last year when I originally intended to. If I’d stayed with my traditional publisher and written the book this spring, It would have pushed the release of Embrace Me At Dawn into 2013. By going independent, I can write the stories in my heart, package them how I believe they should be, and release them almost immediately. For anyone concerned that self-published means poor quality, not for me. I hired two editors and had lots of eyes on the book to make sure the finished product is top notch. The print version was also traditionally typeset. Since Embrace Me At Dawn released, I’ve had the best reviews of the series so far because it’s exactly my vision. So I’m really happy with the decision to publish this book and future installments independently.

4. The last 2 books you wrote so close to deadlines. In fact, I think you finished Embrace Me at Dawn with a just a few days to spare, do you find you write better under pressure?

Not necessarily, no. I just do what needs to be done. My schedule is very tight to start with. So any illness, life issue, or difficulty in getting the story out means my schedule gets somewhere close to impossible. I accept it and live with it. Sometimes, that means I have to change it around to make it work. But I’m always trying to bring fans of each series the next installment as soon as I can without sacrificing quality.

5. What can we look forward to next from you?

I’m currently writing Wicked Lovers #7, OURS TO LOVE, which is Xander’s story. After that, I’ll be writing the next Masters of Ménage book, OUR VIRGIN CONCUBINE, with Lexi Blake, which should be out in August. I’m also working on a new collaboration with two debut authors and I’m having a ball with. Look for a new serialized series titled The Doms of Her Life, coming somewhere around September 1.

6. You collaborate and write a series with Lexi Blake, do you find it harder or easier to write a book with another author and why?

I wouldn’t say either easier or harder, just different. You have to be able to coalesce your ideas together and make something cohesive. Lexi writes with more humor than I do. I’m the drama/angst queen when it comes to story ideas. We decided to tell these sexy, sometimes tongue-in-cheek stories because we were having so much fun simply talking about them. And we’ve found a great way to mesh our styles into something different. The process with Lexi is one we’re quite comfortable with our third book in, and we play off one another well. The collaboration with the other two authors in The Doms of Her Life series is very different, as we’re all sort of championing a character in the story and writing it simultaneously, then blending the best bits. It’s been challenging so far, but a lot of fun.

7. What do you like to read when you’re not writing?

A little bit of everything, but I confess, a lot of erotic romance. I’ve picked up a lot of other things over time. I like my Dan Brown. I’ve loved all the Harry Potter and Twilight books. I enjoyed The Help tremendously. I still read historical romance from time to time with the occasional paranormal. But my heart is with erotic romance. It’s so interesting to me to see what others do with the genre.

Interview with author Samantha Young!

Hello GCReaders!

Today I want to share with you my interview with author, Samantha Young. I am a huge fan of her books, and I am really happy I got the chance to interview her. If you haven't read any of her books yet, I recommend you do. They are so good!

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your books.

OK. Where to start? Uh… I’m 25 years young, I was born and raised in Stirlingshire, Scotland and after graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Ancient and Medieval history I decided to try to get the young adult trilogy I had been writing published. After little success with a small publishing house I withdrew from them and in February 2011 I decided to bite the bullet and self-publish. Since then I’ve published eight novels and one novella. My first trilogy, The Tale of Lunarmorte, is the story of a supernatural war that dates back to ancient Greece and it’s told through the eyes of a werewolf pack. I followed the trilogy with the first in a two part series called The Fade - part one is titled Slumber. Slumber is loosely based on The Sleeping Beauty fairytale and is recommended for ages 16 and up. Slumber was followed by my trilogy Warriors of Ankh where the heroine is kind of the bad guy. Eden Winslow is a soul eater, a descendent of an ancient Egyptian race that devours the souls of humankind. The hero, Noah Valois, is an immortal Warrior of Ankh, a member of the race that hunts soul eaters. Together he and Eden discover not everything is quite as black and white as good and evil. My latest novel, Smokeless Fire, is the first in a brand new series called Fire Spirits and it follows the story of Ari Johnson, an eighteen year old girl who discovers that Jinn live among us.

2. You currently have a couple of series out now, which one would you say is or was your favorite to write?

Ooh that’s difficult. I enjoyed writing them all but for different reasons. The Tale of Lunarmorte was my first series and it has a lot of historical research in book 3 so I suppose I enjoyed putting what I’d learned at university to good use. For Warriors of Ankh it was just exciting to write a character as complex as Eden. I loved finding the balance within her so that readers would still find her likeable despite her ‘bad guy’ status. The best part about writing Slumber was writing the relationship between Rogan and Wolfe. They’re such strong-willed, funny, brave characters and they bounced off one another really well. And finally, I love that there are no limits on my imagination while writing the Fire Spirits series. The mythology of the Jinn is so rich and full of light and dark. It’s wonderful to pull from it and create something new in YA.

3. My favorite, as you know, is your Warriors of Ankh series. Were you worried at all about the reaction you would get from readers? You touch some subjects which isn't commonly seen in YA.

It is quite a dark series and I knew that some readers wouldn’t be comfortable with some of the subjects broached so I put a recommendation on this series for ages 16 and up. When I sat down to write it I knew that to make Eden’s world realistic it would have to be a little raw and violent and there would have to be the suggestion of monstrous acts, otherwise the soul eaters would come across as kind of cheesy. I didn’t want to compromise the twisted creatures I’d created in my head but I also didn’t want to make it an adult series because the whole point of the trilogy was to follow the journey of a teenager on the wrong side of a supernatural battle as she comes of age. For the most part I’ve had a good response to the series so I’m not too worried. There will always be people who don’t like my books and object to certain subjects in YA but every author has to accept that.

4. Why did you choose to self-publish?

I was very apprehensive about self-publishing at first, thinking I could never reach the kind of readership I wanted to through self-publishing. But then I began to follow Joe Konrath and Amanda Hocking and I studied what was the best possible way to make a successful go at it. Thankfully everything I have learned has paid off and thanks to wonderful book bloggers, like yourself (<3) and my awesome, uber supportive readers, I love being self-published!

 5. What are you working on now?

At present I’m working on Scorched Skies (Fire Spirits #2) and This Weeping Frost a Novella (Drip Drop Teardrop #2). I have no publishing date for This Weeping Frost but I hope to have Scorched Skies out by March 16th and this will be followed by Sneak Thievery (The Fade: Part Two) in May 2012. I’m going to be wonderfully busy this year and hopefully my readers have a lot to look forward to.

 6. If any of your books were to be picked up for a movie (unless one has already been optioned), which would you like to see on the big screen, and why?

None have been optioned and that would be an unbelievable dream if one of them ever was! I’m going to go with some of my readers’ opinions and say it would be awesome to see The Tale of Lunarmorte books on the big screen. I think they’d translate really well to cinema because of how action-packed they are. They’re also told from multiple perspectives so this would make it easier for the screenplay. I also think the Warriors of Ankh books could be fleshed out into a T.V. show. Eden’s life is non-stop action all the time and I think it would work well on T.V. considering what young adult audiences are into just now, i.e. The Vampire Diaries etc.

Thank you again!
Thanks for having me, Damaris!

Thank you Samantha! This interview was a lot of fun to read! I cannot wait to devour the rest of your books. I am slowly making my way down the list :-). Oh, and I would love to see Warriors of Ankh as a TV series!

Review: In It To Win It By Morgan Kearns

Strike One

The girl once known as ‘Plain Jane’ Alexander is now the woman who makes men stop and take notice of her long legs and voluptuous feminine curves. Fifteen years ago she drove away from her small town determined to never look back … and to hate Grayson Pierce forever.

Strike Two

Grayson Pierce is a baseball playing, fast car driving, loose woman dating, expensive liquor drinking jerk. He’s also the guy that ripped Jane’s heart out and beat it with a meat cleaver in front of their entire high school.

Strike Three

When fate—and an offer for an exclusive interview—bring Jane home, she finds that some things aren’t as they appear. And Grayson proves that he is In It To Win It; her trust, her heart, and a World Series title.

My Thoughts:

This is my 2nd book by Morgan Kearns. Her first book is "Fade to Black" which was also a great read. And she is such a great writer. Her first book lured you in immediately and "In It To Win It" grabs you as well. A great romance read.

"In It To Win It" is a sweet romance about love, pain and forgiveness. The story teaches you that when life throws you curve balls. You have to stand up to the plate and hit it out the park. Don't let it knock you down. It's about not letting hurt and pain get in the way of finding true happiness and just forgiving so you can enjoy your life.

In "Win" you have your "Plain Jane" that gets hurt by her boyfriend in High School which leads her to decide to leave town. Becoming a successful reporter she is then thrown yet another curve ball, when she has to interview "him" Grayson Pierce. Not exactly excited nor looking forward to her interview with Grayson. He offers her an "exclusive" interview. No holds barred. But little did she know that what he's planning on proving to her that not only is he "In it to win it" at the World Series but her heart as well.

I really enjoyed this book. What I like most about it is how Jane wasn't one of those women that nag and cry about what he did to her. Instead she was a woman about it. She did what she had to do professionally and ended up getting what she wanted as a woman. Her happiness. Whatever Morgan Kearns puts on ink I will read. She's an author that captivates you the moment you open her book and begin reading. She has a fan for life with me. "In It To Win It" a definite Good Choice for Reading.

In my book 5 out of 5 Stars!

Review: Out of Left Field By Morgan Kearns (18+)

Out of Left Field (Deadline & Diamonds, #3)
Out of Left Field By Morgan Kearns
(Ages 18+)

Strike One

Xavier is a jerk with a capital A.S.S. and he offers no apologies. If a woman is willing to give, he’ll gladly take, walking away without a backward glance. He’s not looking for commitment and the only diamond he’s interested in has three bases and a home plate.

Strike Two

Dr. Frances Holden knows all about fixing broken bones and taming arrogant athletes. As the Team Doctor for the Las Vegas Rockets she deals with stubborn ballplayers every day. But nobody is more stubborn than Left Fielder Matthias Xavier III.

Strike Three

When a shoulder injury takes Xavier out of the game, it’s Frankie’s job to get him back on the diamond. His rehab turns out to be more than either of them bargained for, and when she promises to help him face his scarred past, neither of them are prepared for the fireworks that come Out of Left Field and threaten to scorch them both.

          My Review

Yet another home run for Morgan Kearns. Every time Morgan sends me a book, I am certain that I'm going to enjoy it. From Fade to Black to In it to win it to Heart Ache and now Out of Left Field, Morgan has never failed me. She goes the extra mile to make sure her novels are a work of perfection. And with each new novel she keeps getting better and better.

Xavier is your typical jock. He's cocky and arrogant yet a big baby. Like every single man I know, Xavier became a baby when he got injured on the baseball field. Dr. Frankie Holden (Real name Frances) is a strong, educated woman that doesn't back down from a challenge. Her challenge is to make sure Xavier heals nicely. Together they make this book hot with sexual tension. But there's more to this novel besides sparks flying everywhere. In this novel you learn about each character past and their reason for being who they are today.

Out of Left Field has the perfect mix of love and drama. I'm actually a little surprised at how sexy this book is because I've known Morgan for some time now and I know she's a bit uncomfortable writing sexy scenes. So kudos to you for stepping out of your element. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who enjoys a love story. Out of Left Field is a 5 stars for sure and a definite Good Choice for Reading!!

“Heads up!”

Just as I turned, a sudden, powerful force slammed into me, taking me down, and I hit the ground with enough vigor to make the breathwhoosh out of my lungs. The box flew out of my arms, and I was a little stunned at first, lying in the grass. It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling; I’d been thrown from so many horses over the years, I’d lost count. And this is what being thrown felt like. Maybe worse. My hat had shifted and now shaded my eyes. I concentrated on breathing.

Then, suddenly, my hat was pushed off my face, and he was over me. Arms braced on either side of my head. Looking down. Frozen in place, I couldn’t do anything else except stare back at him, and I watched his smile fade as his gaze fixed on mine. He looked about as surprised as I felt.

His face took me off guard. It was … shocking. Not handsome—almost frightening. Rough. The lightest, most startling blue eyes I’d ever seen stared down at me. One of them had a really recent black and blue shiner marring the otherwise fair skin. A whitish half-moon scar started at the corner of the other eye and curved around his cheek bone. Another white scar jagged down from his jaw, just below his ear, halfway down his throat; it was met by a black tattooed inscription that disappeared down his shirt. Super dark hair—almost black—swung over his forehead, and equally dark brows furrowed. We both stared for a few seconds.

Then, his head lowered, and full, firm lips covered mine.

And he kissed me.

One, two, three seconds passed as my brain reclined in some hazy fog where I didn’t know anything or anyone. Only this kiss. Strong lips pushed mine open, just a bit, and a velvety tongue barely swept against mine. A faint trace of spearmint lingered. For an instant, I was completely lost.

Then, the shock wore off, and my brain worked again. Almost too well. Between reality and old panic clawing at me, I reacted.

I reared my knee up and sunk it straight into his family jewels. “Get off me,” I said in a low firm voice. I put my palms against his chest and shoved him.

“Ah, damn!” the guy wheezed. He grabbed his crotch and fell over onto his side. He groaned in pain. I leapt up, stepped over him, and started grabbing my books.

“Jesus fuck, Sunshine.” The guy laughed and wheezed at the same time, and still clutched himself. “What’d you do that for?”

His voice wasn’t too deep and sort of raspy. Heavy accent. He looked like a gangster, only he wore a WU Silverbacks tee shirt, with the number 14 at the upper left chest. Whah’d you do that fah? Definitely not from Texas. He’d kissed me. And for a moment, I’d let him. What was wrong with me? I spared him a harsh glare.

“Are you crazy? Why do you think?”

Male voices caught my attention, and I looked over to my left. A group of guys—jocks, all wearing Silverbacks tees—were laughing. One was on the ground, howling like a total fool.

Apparently, college would be just like high school after all. Maybe worse.

Dark eyes meet mine.
Everything slows, like the world melts into molasses and in it, I’m stuck. A guy stands in front of me, his body only inches away, and suddenly, he’s the only one in the room. The dancers fade into shadows and mist. The music is the low thrum that underscores the world. And there’s just him. Black skin, dark as I’ve ever seen. Sculpted arms hinting at a strong body, as if everything of him is muscle and sinew. He’s about my age, at least six-foot-two, and easily the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on. And he smiles like he knows me. Like he’s saying hello.
His hand reaches out. Brushes a shadow, a girl, and shimmering mist ghosts away from her to caress his arm like a lover. His smile broadens.
The mist absorbs into his skin.
He nods to me, still friendly. Still like we’re acquaintances who’ve simply run into one another on the street. And then he’s gone into the shadows and the crowd comes rushing back again.
I gasp. Bodies buffet me on all sides, crushing me, and my exhilaration is shattered. The music is too loud. The lights spin like deranged kaleidoscopes, blinding me. I’m hot, covered in sweat, and the emerald green dress is glued to my skin. My pulse is flying but my body keeps moving like it can’t help itself, like it’s lost to the rush of swirling lasers, pounding music, and fog.
Fog that’s pouring into me.
My eyes go wide. Flecked with sparks of color and light, clouds of it rise from the dancers like mist over a pond. Tendrils stream away from those nearest to me, moving like charmed snakes to coil around my body, slipping over my dress, my skin, and then vanishing inside me.
It’s so not a fog machine. Not this. Sweet God, what’s happening?

Skye Malone is a fantasy and paranormal romance author, which means she spends most of her time not-quite-convinced that the things she imagines couldn’t actually exist.

Born and raised in central Illinois, she hopes someday to travel the world — though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong and passionate characters, complex villains, and satisfying endings that stay with you long after the book is closed. An inveterate writer, she can’t go a day without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.

Skye also writes YA urban fantasy as Megan Joel Peterson and is the author of The Children and the Blood trilogy.

Demons are real.
And now I’m one of them.

I never expected my boring, regular life to change on a night out with my best friend. I only thought I was going to celebrate her birthday at a local club, not end up in a hospital after witnessing supernatural events that couldn’t possibly be real.

Talk about being wrong.

Now I’ve drawn the attention of the most dangerous forces in the demon world. I’m being stalked by a guy who can be in multiple places at once. I’m overwhelmed by a hunger I can’t shake—an impossible hunger that compels me to feed off the sexual energy of others, even if it might make me kill somebody. I’m losing control and entering a secret world that exists in the shadows of my own—a world filled with vampires, werewolves, and demons who look just like anyone else.

The night was supposed to be simple. Normal. After all, I thought I was human and my life thus far has been unbelievably ordinary.

Now it’s anything but.

Originally released as three novellas—Touch Me: Part One, Touch Me: Part Two, and Touch Me: Part Three.

Excerpt
