Cover Reveal: WILD CARD by Jamie Wyman

WILD CARD
by: Jamie Wyman
Release Date: 11/25
Genre: Urban Fantasy

It was bad enough that gods gambled with human souls, but Catherine Sharp’s soul just had to be won by the Greek goddess of Discord, Eris. As if working a dead-end tech support job didn’t suck the life out of her as it was. Now, Cat finds herself performing random tasks for the goddess in her free time.

But when Coyote, the Native American trickster himself, claims to have won her own soul in Mayhem's weekly poker game, Cat wants in on the action. With five sneaky gods upping the ante, Cat needs to find a way to collect the winning chips that could save her soul.

Marius, a handsome yet irritating satyr with his own debt to Eris, might finally come in handy for something. If they play their cards right and work together, Cat and Marius may just get their freedom back. If they don't kill each other or fall in love first.

After a misspent adulthood pursuing a Music Education degree, JAMIE WYMAN fostered several interests before discovering that being an author means never having to get out of pajamas. (However, she can eat/spin fire, tell you a lot about auditioning to be a Blue Man, and read/write in Circular Gallifreyan.) As an author, Jamie’s favorite playgrounds are urban fantasy, horror and creepy carnival settings. When she’s not traipsing about with her imaginary friends, she lives in Phoenix with two hobbits and two cats. She is proud to say she has a deeply disturbed following at her blog.

Jamie’s debut novel, WILD CARD, will be coming to an e-reader near you November 2013 thanks to Entangled Publishing. You can also find her short story “The Clever One” in the anthology WHEN THE HERO COMES HOME 2 (Dragon Moon Press, August ’13).

Rainer was scanning her face, his eyes gleaming with a warmer light than usual.
“Cheer up, now, gorgeous. You can’t win ’em all. Flirtini,” he told the barman. “Make mine bourbon.” He smiled at Eve. “You look like a vodka woman to me.”
She made an effort to pick herself up off the floor.
 “I don’t know why you would assume that. I hardly drink at all, except at wakes. Train crashes. Tragedies.” She swivelled her chair so she could keep Brent in view, though it was hard to keep Brent and eliminate Honey at one and the same time. “Times of mourning and terrible heartbreak.”
“Must have to do with those Fifth Avenue shoes you’re wearing.”
She noticed Rainer’s gaze drift down to her faux Louboutins. At least it was gratifying someone had noticed them. Almost automatically she crossed her legs, but then—damn — her skirt rode up too high and she needed to uncross them. Then she dangled a shoe from her toes and let her foot swing some.
Maybe it seemed flirty, but her heart wasn’t in it. It was a mere primitive reflex.  With the Dixons watching her every move, it would be a pity to disappoint her public.
But she could tell Rainer wasn’t minding one bit. He scanned her knees, a smile playing on his mouth. “You know, it was touching, that little sigh you gave.”
She glanced warily at him. “What sigh?”
“When Brent pecked your pretty cheek. What were you for hoping for? Something more significant? Maybe a kiss full on the lips? Deep and soulful? Tongues?”
Her spine stiffened in shock. This guy was up - front. Did he have any respect for a woman’s tender feelings?  If Jenna Mae hadn’t sidled up to the bar right then and ensconced herself a couple of spots along, Eve might have forgotten her manners and slammed him for his nerve.
As it was, she kept her words to a stern murmur. “You are rude, mister.  I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes, you do. You know. Don’t think I don’t sympathize. I know what it is to lust.” His gaze rested appreciatively on her mouth.
“Shh.”  Frowning, she darted a glance along to where Jenna Mae was stretching her gawky neck, straining to listen .
Forced to lean closer to Rainer, Eve lowered her voice to a whisper. “Don’t even say that word. There’s never been anything like that between Brent and me.”
His black brows lifted.  “No? Didn’t I hear him say you were his secretary?”
Beneath his black lashes his eyes were alert, amused and unnerving. The faintest of scents teased her nostrils. A mix of woody cologne, clean clothes and distilled essence of man. It was annoying how that trifled with her concentration. It nearly threw her off the track of her thoughts.
“What’s your point?  I assure you,” she retorted, pulling herself together, “Brent is a very professional guy who would never break his code of ethics.”
“Never?” His mouth quirked in disbelief.
“Never.”
Unless, of course, a kiss could be counted. Tongues at midnight. Hands.
“We - e - ell. If you say so.” Rainer pressed his lips together, then gave his bourbon a meditative sip. His mouth was really very stirring and expressive, the lower lip pleasingly cushioned, suggesting an arousing resilience if a woman happened to...
She gave herself a mental shake. For pete’s sake, she wasn’t thinking of kissing him.  “Why look so doubtful, Rainer? Brent is a very focused person. Even if he felt strongly and irrevocably attracted to an employee, even if he longed to kiss her, yearned to caress her soft skin, itched to put his hand on her...on her...he wouldn’t dream of ...”
“ He must have the resistance of a saint.”  His voice was darker than the night.
His glance met hers, sensual, bold, then slid down her throat to where her breasts were innocently longing to expose themselves.  Against all the odds her skin tingled as if singed by a naked flame.
It threw her off balance, if the truth be known.  On the one hand there was Brent across the room, holding a piece of her heart in his hands, and now here was Rainer. Powerful, masculine and entirely confusing to the senses.
She couldn’t ever remember this degree of confusion before. Being held captive by the sheer force of a man’s physical aura. It was a whole new experience, and strangely exhilarating.
Maybe it was the flirtini affecting her brain. She composed her face to appear more stern. “He didn’t need the resistance of a saint. I don’t know what you expect from your women em...”
She’d meant to say “women employees,” but before she could finish he cut in smoothly, his voice as deep and dark as the devil’s.  “Loyalty undiluted and passion uninhibited.”  He smiled.
That smile reflected in his eyes with a message that was nothing short of bad.
“Oh, please.” She gave a mocking laugh, but a sultry shiver slithered down her spine to the backs of her knees. It was hard to deny the guy had impact.
“I’m not criticising you, Eve.” His wolfish gaze flicked to her throat, then drifted southward. In spite of their proud history of aloofness, against all the odds her nipples stood up and quivered shamelessly. “I totally understand. If two very attractive people are forced by circumstances to be together in close confinement, bumping into each other, hips occasionally touching, he accidentally brushes her breast, she grazes his thigh with hers, it’s only a matter of time before...”
“But nothing did happen.” How she wished people wouldn’t always leap to conclusions. She’d been hung for so many sheep in the past, when she’d hardly ever done more than pet the woolly heads of the little lambs who’d pursued her.
And purely out of kindness, so as not to hurt their feelings.
“Well, nothing much,” she felt forced to amend.
“Ah.” Rainer’s eyes lit with a knowing amusement that riled her.
“Oh, what’s with that ‘ah?’ Look— I freely admit— I admired Brent’s stance on environmental issues.”
Rainer broke into a laugh. “His stance?”
It was amazing to see how a laugh lit up the man’s face and warmed his grey eyes. Just quietly, she could see why that Dixon cousin had gone so entirely overboard.
Rainer was a stunner.

Melting the Millionaire's Heart by Linda Morris -- Interview/giveaway (Adult)

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

Thanks so much for having me here at Good Choice Reading today. My latest release is a novella from Entangled called Melting the Millionaire's Heart. It's a funny, sexy, and sweet story about two strangers who end up snowed in together. (Snowed-in stories are some of my favorites -- there's something so romantic about the idea of having to spend time with someone that maybe you normally wouldn't, and then finding something to love about that person.) In Melting the Millionaire's Heart, the heroine, Kayla, has a bad attitude toward the millionaire whose estate she is traveling to when her car slides off the road in a snowstorm. Her boss has told her to kiss up to this unknown donor to encourage him to give money to the school for special-needs kids where she teaches. Based on past experience with other donors, she suspects the guy is probably a wealthy blowhard making a donation to the school for PR purposes. She's rescued by a handsome stranger, little dreaming that he is in fact the donor she's come to meet. He doesn't admit it, either, which leads to all sorts of complications as their attraction to one another grows!

Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?

I do read reviews, although I may have to revise that policy if I'm going to keep writing and preserve my sanity. This may sound nuts, but when I get a bad review, I look up bad reviews for books I love. It could be a recent romance I really enjoyed, an all-time keeper, or a classic by Austen or Dickens. No matter how much I adored the book, I can always find bad reviews for it. It's a good reminder that some people just want different things out of a book than I do, and that no book pleases everyone.

What's the one piece of technology you can't live without?

My laptop with Internet connection. I'm not actually all that fond of cell phones, and although I enjoy reading on my Kindle, I often still read print books too. But if I have to go too long without checking my favorite blogs, Goodreads, Twitter, and so on, I get a little itchy.

If you could choose one book cover to put on your wall as a poster, what would it be?

The cover for Melting the Millionaire's Heart, which was designed by my editor at Entangled, Heather Howland. Heather's covers have won numerous contests, and no wonder. She's awesome!

Do you have a book in your house that's just destroyed because you've read it so much?

I've been lugging around my favorite keepers from the late 80s/90s by Patricia Gaffney and Laura Kinsale for years -- I've reread them heavily and they're in pretty bad shape! I don't mind, though. A book so good that you read it again and again--what could be better than that?

How much of the characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?

I wouldn't say any of my characters are based directly on myself or anyone I know, but most of my heroines start off somewhat less-than-confident, and that's true of me as well. I don't think I could relate to a brash, full-of-herself heroine who's always sure she's right.

How many times were you turned down form a book offer before you finally got published?

My first book, Forget-Me-Not, was bought by the third publisher I submitted it to. Most people think you never have to worry about rejections again after you're published, but that's not true. I wrote Melting the Millionaire's Heart specifically for an Entangled call for submissions, but other books I've written since being first published have been rejected multiple times. Your work has to be at a certain standard of quality to be publishable, but once you reach that threshold, it's really about getting your work on the right agent's or editor's desk at the right time. You need a little luck to go along with all your hard work to be a success.

What are you working on now?

I have a finished category contemporary romance that I'm shopping around now, and I'm working on a follow-up to Melting the Millionaire's Heart right now. It's Carolyn's story.

Can you share a teaser of your book with our readers?

Sure, here's a short scene when Kayla and Ryan have taken shelter together to ride out the storm. The power is out, so they're roasting some hot dogs and making s'mores over the fireplace:

A dimple appeared in his left cheek. Whoa, he was adorable. If her mother hadn’t raised her right, she’d be tempted to lean forward right now and explore that cute little indentation with the tip of her tongue. Maybe she would, later—she couldn’t rule it out.

She finished off her hot dog. Should she have another?

No, the s’mores beckoned. “I’ll do the honors for dessert. I’ll have you know I’m a s’mores expert.” She stuck a couple of big marshmallows on the end of her skewer and held them over the fire. The sonorous tones of the grandfather clock announced eleven o’clock.

“Really?” He leaned back on the hearth rug, propping himself up on his hands. The position showed off his long, leanly muscled thighs. “And where did you come by this expertise?”

“Years of relentless training in the Brownies and Girl Scouts.”

“Ah. Sounds grueling.”

“It was,” she said. “I made sacrifices and suffered a lot. In the end, it was worth it because I became a Jedi master of marshmallow toasting.”

“Do tell,” he said, his white teeth flashing in the firelight.

The sight gave her a pang somewhere very near her heart.

God, she really liked this guy.

Interview with author of KISSING KENDALL, Jennifer Shirk.

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

Well. I'm a pharmacist-stay-at-home mom turned author. How do you like THAT hat? LOL! I'm married and have one child, four hermit crabs and now one adorable guinea pig.

In my latest Bliss romance, KISSING KENDALL, Kendall has been trying to pick up of the pieces of her life since the death of her firefighter husband almost two years ago. The last thing she’s interested in is love and feels the best way to start moving on is to concentrate on opening up her new bakery business. Unfortunately, she’s finding it hard to remember those two points now that her old friend and policeman Brad Mayer is back in her life and giving her a helping hand.

After losing her husband in the line of duty, Kendall doesn’t want to get involved with another man with a dangerous job, and refuses to give in to her attraction to the handsome police officer. But Brad has always loved Kendall from afar and now that he senses she might feel the same, he’s determined to show her the real danger would be to lose another chance at love.

Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?

I unfortunately DO read reviews. The good ones make me feel good and the bad ones I try to take with a grain of salt and learn from.

Recently, I must have been extra emotional because I had to step away from the computer and make myself a cup of peach herbal tea and put extra honey in it. It made me better. Sort of. :)

What's the one piece of technology you can't live without?

I cannot live without my laptop. It's getting to the point that my hubby is starting to call me "computerina". LOL!

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Funny, sensitive, neat-freak.

What do you normally like to read when not writing?

I normally like to read romance since that's what I write, but I also love YA and thrillers and I throw in some nonfiction too.

How many times were you turned down form a book offer before you finally got published?

I wrote two books that were rejected. The first reject went something like "We can't use this." The second reject actually had a nice explanation of why it was rejected. Then I wrote a third and that was the one that sold! :)

What do you need to set the mood for you to write?

I need to make sure there are no dishes in the sink then I need to check my email and then check in with my critique partners at our forum and then I look over my story notes. THEN I can finally write! Whew!

Heels or flats?

Flats! I'm 5'8 and tall enough.

Iced tea or hot tea?

Iced tea or hot tea. HOT. I'm cold more often than not, and I find hot tea so soothing.

Movies at home or Movie Theater?

Movies at home. We have a giant popcorn tub and we can pause the movie for bathroom breaks.

Twitter or Facebook?

I'm loving Twitter right now. It's quick and fun. Although I go through phases every couple of months.

Actual book or eReader?

Ereader. I read at night and love that I can shut the lights outs and read on my Ipad without disturbing the hubby.

Young Adult or New Adult?

I'm still a YA reader although I have read quite a few REALLY good new adults.

THANKS SO MUCH for having me!

About Jennifer Shirk: Jennifer Shirk has a bachelor degree in pharmacy--which has in NO WAY at all helped her with her writing career. But she likes to point it out, since it shows romantic-at-hearts come in all shapes, sizes, and mind-numbing educations.

She writes sweet (and sometimes even funny) romances for Samhain Publishing, Avalon Books/Montlake Romance and now Entangled Publishing. She won third place in the RWA 2006 NYC's Kathryn Hayes Love and Laughter Contest with her first book, The Role of a Lifetime.

Lately she's been on a serious exercise kick. But don't hold that against her.

Kendall Grisbaum is finally taking charge of her life—pouring her heart into opening a new bakery business and even allowing her best friend Georgie to play matchmaker for her. Trouble is, the one guy she secretly wants is Georgie’s older brother, Brad, who is decidedly off limits.

Brad can’t seem to get his little sister’s best friend out of his mind. He and Kendall used to be close friends, too, and as a local policeman, Brad can’t help but play protector, looking out for Kendall. When he offers to help her renovate her new bakery space on the side, their friendship—and their attraction—flares back to life.

Amid the temptation of doughnut muffins and blueberry cobbler, a new temptation draws them both closer. Can they take a chance on love when it means risking their friendship, even when not doing so risks everything?

Baby It's Cold Outside - Interviews & Giveaway! (18+)

Winner: BN100!!

Welcome to our stop on the Baby, It's Cold Outside blog tour!

Baby, It's Cold Outside is an anthology featuring romance stories by authors Amy Andrews, Aimee Carson, Kate Hardy, and Heidi Rice.

Today we share FOUR interviews with you. Yup, FOUR. We got to interview all four authors and here is what they had to say...

What do you need to set the mood for you to write?

I need the right collection of songs and the collage of photos I create that “tells” the story I’m trying to write. A little cooperation from my family is a must, too! Constant interruptions make it next to impossible to keep your mind in the right mood.

What's your favorite thing to do when you're not writing?

My property borders the Black Hills National Forest, so I love to hike or ride my dirt bike on the trails.

What is your favorite book of all time that you can reread a hundred times, and it still feels like the first time?

I have several like this, but I have to pick Pride and Prejudice. I make a point to reread it every year.

Cat or Dog? Dog, because cats intimidate the heck out of me. They always look at you like they know something you don’t . . .

Mountain views or Ocean views? I grew up in Florida but now live in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, so definitely mountain! I love cold. I love snow. And best of all, no sunscreen required!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  1. Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.
I’ve written more than 50 novels for Harlequin; I live in Norwich (UK) with my husband, two children, springer spaniel and too many books to count! ‘Tis the Season to Kiss Santa is one of the four novellas in Baby It’s Cold Outside – it’s all about how a Chief Elf who loves Christmas teaches a stand-in Santa that Christmas dreams really can come true.
  1. What's the one piece of technology you can't live without?
My iMac. (Let’s just say my editor says some of my apps need a child lock on them…!)
  1. What's your favorite thing to do when you're not writing?
Depends on the weather and if it’s the weekend – my favourite things are walking on the beach, reading, baking, and going to the gym (and if anyone had told me that last one a year ago, I would’ve laughed and said they were crazy… but it was one of my better decisions!)
  1. Describe yourself in 3 words. warm, kind, eccentric
  1. What do you normally like to read when not writing?
A real mixture – I enjoy contemporary romance, historical crime, non-fiction about science or history (or, even better, both).
  1. If you could meet anyone and spend an hour with them alive or dead who and why?
I would dearly love to spend that hour with my mum. She died when I was 20, so she never got to meet my children or see me published. I’d so love to be able to share that with her. (I’m pretty sure she knows. But to talk to her again would be just fantastic.)
  1. What is your favorite book of all time that you can reread a hundred times, and it still feels like the first time?
Can I be greedy and have three? Liz Fielding’s ‘Gentlemen Prefer… Brunettes’ (because her dialogue is fantastic and I wish I’d written it), Diana Norman’s ‘The Vizard Mask’ (best historical novel EVER, for me – set in Restoration London during the plague – fabulous characterisation and setting); and Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ (speaks for itself!!)
  1. What scene was your favorite to write? The snow angel scene
  1. If there is one genre that you have not written in yet, but would love to try writing a book in that specific genre, what would it be? Timeslip
Cat or Dog? Dog
Ice cream or Sorbet? Ice cream
Heels or flats? What, I have to wear shoes???
Coffee or Tea? Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon (well, hey, I’m a Brit – and my fave tea is very British, too, i.e. Fortnum & Mason’s Countess Grey blend)
Iced tea or hot tea?  Hot tea
Snow or rain? Snow, as long as I don’t have to drive in it
Movies at home or Movie Theater? Theater
Actual book or eReader?  Just got my very first Kindle so the jury’s still out on that one!
Spring or Summer? spring
Fall or winter? fall
Vampires or Werewolves? Antonio Banderas in ‘Interview with a Vampire’, please
Action movies or Chick flicks? Chick flicks
Horror movies or Mystery movies? Mystery
Mountain views or Ocean views? Ocean
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?

Yes, it's a weakness of mine. When I read a stinker I feel wounded (I'm not gonna lie - that's my baby they're taking a pop at) but then I go on Goodreads, look up a book I adored (Outlander, or The Time Traveller's Wife are good examples) and read some of their bad reviews, and it always makes me feel better - because it totally puts my bad review in perspective. Not everyone can love your book - in fact some people are gonna hate it - but that doesn't mean they hate you (I hope!) and it doesn't mean you're a bad writer, it just means they didn't like your book. And as long as you love your baby and keep on writing the best book you can, that's really all that matters. Of course, not reading those stinker reviews would be a lot easier.... So I'm working on it!

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Svelte, stunning, delusional

Who do you most admire?

My Mum. She's epic. She's 76, has been a widow for 20 years, has four kids and 10 grandkids who all adore her, is currently in the Maldives — and has trips to Australia and Cambodia planned for the new year. We call her Granny Wanderlust (for obvious reasons) - and I want to be her when I grow up!

THIS OR THAT

Cat or Dog?  Neither - we already have four tree frogs, two toads, two turtles, several goldfish, a leopard gekko, two African landsnails and a crayfish courtesy of my younger son (who I really should have named Noah)
Ice cream or Sorbet? Ice Cream, preferably Gelati, Sorbet's just pretentious ice IMHO!
Heels or flats? Heels for nights on the town, flats for everything else.
Iced tea or hot tea? Iced tea in Savannah, hot tea in London
Snow or rain? Snow (rain is somewhat passé in the UK)
Movies at home or Movie Theater? Theatre, unless we're watching The Polar Express next to the tree on Christmas Eve.
Twitter or Facebook? Way too much of both.
Actual book or eReader? eReader - I'm in love with my Kindle.
Vampires or Werewolves? Team Edward all the way, baby.
Ghost or Zombies? Ghost, can't be dealing with all that rotting flesh.
Action movies or Chick flicks? Chick flicks (unless we're talking Daniel Craig in his blue Speedos as Bond)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Pragmatic, friendly, lazy
When did you realize that you wanted to become a writer? What was the very first thing you ever wrote?
I realized after my first rejection that I wanted to become a published author. Rejection made me bloody-minded  The first thing I ever wrote(apart from angsty teenage poetry) is the aforementioned rejection. It was a 50k category romance that I sent to Harlequin. I wrote it in 10 days!! A chapter a day for ten days. Which of course is why it was terrible and it was rejected but to this day I think it’s my favourite book I’ve ever written because it’s rejection made me determined to achieve the goal of publication. 12 years later I finally made it!!
Do you read reviews of your books? What do you do when you read a not-so-nice one?
Of course I do. I always want to know what readers are saying about me even if it’s not nice. Not everyone’s going to like what you write and I have a pretty thick skin so I’m okay with that. What is hard is when you get a personal email that tells you how much they hate you/the book. What do you do then? I blog about it  http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/3265321-dear-reader-four-alternatives-to-hate-mail
Cat or Dog? Dog
Ice cream or Sorbet? Ice cream
Heels or flats? Flats
Knives or sword? Neither
Coffee or Tea? Tea
Iced tea or hot tea? Hot tea
Snow or rain? Snow
Movies at home or Movie Theater? Movie theatre
Soda or Juice? Soda
Twitter or Facebook? Twitter (can’t believe I just wrote that – recent convert!!!)
Actual book or eReader? Book
Actual book or Audiobook? Book
Spring or Summer? Spring
Fall or winter?  Fall (bearing in mind where I live, there is NO “Fall” to speak of!)
Long Sleeves or Short Sleeves? Short
Young Adult or New Adult? YA
Vampires or Werewolves? Neither
Ghost or Zombies? Neither. Although since reading Kylie Scott I’d have to choose Zombie’s.
Action movies or Chick flicks? Chick flicks
Horror movies or Mystery movies? Mystery movies
Mountain views or Ocean views? Ocean views
