In The Great Pursuit, the dramatic sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Great Hunt, Wendy Higgins delivers another thrilling fantasy filled with dangerous enemies, political intrigue, searing romance, and a princess who is willing to do everything to protect her kingdom.

One hunt has ended, but the pursuit for love and justice continues.

The kingdom of Lochlanach has traded the great beast that once terrorized the realm of Eurona for something far more dangerous: the ire of powerful Lashed woman Rosaria Rocato. Rosaria demands that Eurona overturn the laws prohibiting magic, or an innocent will be killed each day.

Despite the king’s resistance, Princess Aerity believes they must make peace with the Lashed, and though she’s accepted a betrothal to the man who took down the beast, she cannot help thinking about Paxton, the Lashed man who stole her heart and disappeared.

Aerity soon discovers that Paxton has joined Rosaria’s army in the war against her family. Though her feelings for him are still strong, her duty to her kingdom and her family is stronger—especially when her parents are kidnapped and she has to step up to the throne and once again put aside what’s best for her in order to do what’s best for her people. Paxton and Princess Aerity must fight to see what is more powerful: their love or the impending war between the magical Lashed and the non-magic humans.

Review: My Lady Jane by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton & Cynthia Hand

MY LADY JANE
by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
Kindle Edition, 491 pages
Published June 7th 2016
by HarperTeen

Add to GoodReads

The comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey. In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.

What do you get when you mix history with fiction and a touch of magic? My Lady Jane!

This bright and funny book is written from the POV of three main characters; Jane, Edward and Gifford. The authors, Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows were responsible for writing the view of one character each throughout the book. You could worry this might lead to a book feeling disjointed and choppy but it was just the opposite. The story flowed beautifully between each character and it was impossible to say which author wrote for which character. The writing truly delivers and never feels forced.

Though Lady Jane Grey suffered from a tragic ending in history, the authors offered, and delivered, a light-hearted and comical take on her story by giving her the ending they felt she deserved. With the kind of humor you’d find in Monty Python and The Princess Bride, they’ve given us a unique story that is sure to be enjoyed by all. I laughed out loud many times and most of the time those moments garnered questionable looks from those around me. The comedy does not waiver at any point during the story and the plot is exceptional and stands on its own, outside the comedic bits.

I thoroughly enjoyed and adored this book much more than I anticipated. It is funny, endearing and magical. Loveable heroes, despicable villains and shape-shifting magic are combined to bring a quirky yet charming 5 star tale that’s sure to make its way into your heart. Inconceivable!

Here’s a few (because there were so many) of my favorite quotes:

“Books were Jane’s great love: history and philosophy and religion, mostly, but anything she could get her hands on”

“My lady, please! I am indecent!” “You are.“ Jane agreed. “Not to mention the fact that you are also unclothed.”

“Jane had always resisted the notion that women were weaker than men, not just physically, but intellectually.”

“Who on earth could feel comfortable enough to sleep in a room with no books?”

“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse. Oh. Sorry, G. Not you, of course.”

Exciting news announced 7/28/16 on the My Lady Jane website: Two more Jane books are in the works. You can add them to your Goodreads now: My Plain Jane and My Calamity Jane.

MINI REVIEW

I am a huge fan of Sophie Jordan! I was super, super, super excited when I found out that she was releasing a new young adult series, and high fantasy at that! It's all I've been reading lately.

My first thought after reading chapter one was YES! This book is definitely going to rock! I loved Luna from page one. I thought she was a pretty kick-butt character.

A couple of chapters in, Sophie Jordan reveals something that left me with my jaw open. And the way she did it had me cracking up! For some, they might pick up on it right away, but I was completely taken by surprise. It made the story so much more interesting after that. I just had to know how? How does Luna do it? The story was very unique compared to other young adult novels I've read in this genre, which I think is why the story still feels so fresh in my memory. I actually read it about four months ago, but I can remember almost every little detail. SO GOOD!

Of course I don't have to sit here and type away how swoon worthy Fowler is. If you are a fan of Sophie Jordan's then you know just how fast she can make your heart beat with her romances!!!

4.5 Stars!

(From Fowler's POV)

I faced Luna, annoyed at the intrusion. In truth, annoyed at everything. I shouldn’t have been here with any of these people. I should have been far away, my only distraction avoiding dwellers.

Propping my hands on my hips, I gave her an eyeful, waiting for her shock, her embarrassment, but it didn’t come. She stared straight at me, still that oddly composed girl from the forest unaffected by arrows flying at her head or approaching monsters.

Or by me standing naked in front of her.

“I didn’t realize you were in here,” she explained.

I didn’t bother to reach for my clothes. I angled my head, waiting for her to move, to avert her eyes, to turn. Expected behavior. She did none of those things. She didn’t even blink.

“Your mother—”

“Perla is not my mother.”

“Your friend then.” I lowered my hands to my sides. Awareness prickled over my skin at the proximity of this girl to me when I wasn’t dressed. “She complained that I reeked of blood and the outside. She told me to change in here.”

Luna angled her head in that curious manner of hers. “Perla doesn’t like the Outside. Not even the smell of it. Reminds her of them.”

My bare feet moved over the cold stone as I approached her, waiting for her to bolt. I swept my gaze over her, inches from her now. Still, she gave no reaction. I was reacting but she didn’t seem to notice.

I studied her. She was too clean and her attire was far too fine. The gold thread woven into the bodice transfixed me. It was a long time since I had seen a female wearing so fine a dress. Most people wore threadbare garments, worn and patched.

Shaking my head, I looked at her face again, studying the smooth and shining hair  and bottomless dark eyes. Now, in the lamplight, I could detect tiny flecks of amber in the deep brown depths that I hadn’t noticed outside.

Her lips parted slightly with unspoken words. I was close enough that I could count the smattering of freckles on her nose. They weren’t sun-kissed freckles. There was no chance for that. Not in this life.

She stared back at me, her stare fixing dead center in my chest. An alarm went off in my head, warning me that something wasn’t right. Something wasn’t as it should be.

“You . . .” My voice faded as I struggled with an idea that couldn’t be possible.

“What?” She lifted her chin, her expression mild, unaffected, her eyes now looking directly at me.

Through me.

My heart hammered in my ears as I slowly lifted a hand between us. Not touching, but simply putting it out there with all the stealth of a hunting predator. “You should have knocked.”

“Why?”

“Why?” I echoed like I was testing the word, tasting it. This close, her body radiated a warmth that settled into the pores of my exposed skin. “Are you really so bold you don’t . . .” My voice constricted into that strangled hoarseness again. I looked down at myself and then back up to her face again. Still no reaction on her part. She folded her hands in front of her, the fingers laced. She wasn’t this bold. No. She was something else.

I took her hand. She started at the sensation of my callused fingers on her softer skin. My pulse jumped and skittered at the base of my throat, but I ignored it, placing her chilled hand, palm flat, against my bare chest. Her fingers spread wide, each one a burning imprint.

She made a choked, mewling sound.

“Because”—my voice scratched out of me—“I’m naked.”

Fire scored her cheeks. It was the blush I expected when she first walked into the room.

Now she knew. But she hadn’t known before.

She gasped, tugging her hand. I held it there a moment before letting go. She pulled away as though stung.

I stepped toward her, this time waving a hand before her face.

“Stop that,” she snapped, sensing the air stirring in front of her. Only sensing though. Not seeing. She swatted at my hand, stopping when her back hit the door.

“You—” My voice broke off and I dropped my arm.

She shook her head fiercely, hair pelting her cheeks. Her eyes gleamed, panic moving over her features. She reached for the door latch at her hip, ready to flee.

She didn’t want to hear it. Didn’t want me to know.

“You can't see."

Revenge And The Wild by Michelle Modesto (Interview & Giveaway)

Follow The Blog Tour >>HERE<<

Hey GCReaders!

Welcome to our stop on the REVENGE AND THE WILD by Michelle Modesto blog tour! We got the chance to interview Michelle Modesto on REVENGE AND THE WILD.

But first, here's a little about the book...

Title: REVENGE AND THE WILD
Author: Michelle Modesto
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Pages: 384
Publisher: Balzer+Bray
Formats: Hardcover, eBook

The two-bit town of Rogue City is a lawless place, full of dark magic and saloon brawls, monsters and six-shooters. But it’s perfect for seventeen-year-old Westie, the notorious adopted daughter of local inventor Nigel Butler.

Westie was only a child when she lost her arm and her family to cannibals on the wagon trail. Nine years later, Westie may seem fearsome with her foul-mouthed tough exterior and the powerful mechanical arm built for her by Nigel, but the memory of her past still haunts her. She’s determined to make the killers pay for their crimes—and there’s nothing to stop her except her own reckless ways.

But Westie’s search ceases when a wealthy family comes to town looking to invest in Nigel’s latest invention, a machine that can harvest magic from gold—which Rogue City desperately needs as the magic wards that surround the city start to fail. There’s only one problem: the investors look exactly like the family who murdered Westie’s kin. With the help of Nigel’s handsome but scarred young assistant, Alistair, Westie sets out to prove their guilt. But if she’s not careful, her desire for revenge could cost her the family she has now.

This thrilling novel is a remarkable tale of danger and discovery, from debut author Michelle Modesto.

1. One of the things I love best about The Revenge and The Wild is that you managed to fill the story with a little bit of every genre. Was this something your found challenging to do?

Yes! So much yes. The more components you add to the novel, the more you have to keep track of. In hindsight, I probably could’ve left a few things out, but while I was writing the story, all these ideas kept popping into my head and I just kept adding.

2. Was it your goal to mix each genre into one book?

Not at first. It started as a simple western steampunk story, but I kept getting bored with it. I was going back and forth between the western and a paranormal I’d been working on. Neither one were really keeping my attention. It wasn’t until I mixed those two ideas together that I got a clear picture of the world in my mind. Adding the cannibals was when I got excited about it.

3. Is there more to Westie's story?

Probably not. While it was fun watching Westie wreak havoc in this world, it was always meant to be a standalone.

4. What is your favorite scene from The Revenge and the Wild (without any spoilers)?

The scene with Olive and Westie at the tree was one of my favorites to write. There’s just something about creepy children that gets under my skin—it all started with Pet Sematary and the scene with Gage under the bed. *shudders*

5. If there is one thing you wish you could add or take out of the story, what would it be? And why?

There are quite a few things I wish I could add and take away, but mostly I wish I could go back and add more depth to the Wintu and their story.  There were so many moving parts, I sometimes got overwhelmed, and in doing so, I fell back on old weird western clichés. Writing a novel isn’t easy. All you can do is learn from your mistakes and try to do better next time.

Review: The White Rose by Amy Ewing

THE WHITE ROSE
by Amy Ewing
Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: October 6th 2015
by HarperTeen

Violet is on the run. After the Duchess of the Lake catches Violet with Ash, the hired companion at the Palace of the Lake, Violet has no choice but to escape the Jewel or face certain death. So along with Ash and her best friend, Raven, Violet runs away from her unbearable life of servitude.

But no one said leaving the Jewel would be easy. As they make their way through the circles of the Lone City, Regimentals track their every move, and the trio barely manages to make it out unscathed and into the safe haven they were promised—a mysterious house in the Farm.

But there’s a rebellion brewing, and Violet has found herself in the middle of it. Alongside a new ally, Violet discovers her Auguries are much more powerful than she ever imagined. But is she strong enough to rise up against the Jewel and everything she has ever known?

The White Rose is a raw, captivating sequel to The Jewel that fans won’t be able to put down until the final shocking moments.

The White Rose has my emotions all over. The Jewel was one of my favorite reads of last year, but unfortunately I did not enjoy The White Rose as much as I did The Jewel.

The White Rose offers a lot more than The Jewel, so why didn't I enjoy it as much? I think for multiple reasons, and one being is that I had a hard time finding that connection with the characters like I did in the first book. I don't know what it was, really, but I didn't really care for them. Well, that's not entirely true. I did end up liking Ash way more in this book than I did in the first, and my love for Garnett remains the same. Violet didn't really do anything that made me dislike her, but I didn't love her. I also think the fact that I read book one so long ago, that I sort of forgot all the reasons why I loved her so much. I wasn't a fan of the romance in book one, and unfortunately I am still not a fan of it in The White Rose. Even though I am now a fan of Ash, and understand him better, I just don't feel the chemistry between him and Violet. It just isn't there for me. I do think Ash steps up to the plate though, and shows Violet that he is more than just a "Companion". He doesn't just sit back and play the puppet in this one.

Oh, and I can't forget Violet's best friend, Raven. Poor Raven. She has been through so much and she struggles a lot with herself. She plays a bigger role in this book than the first, and I am happy the author did that. She was one of my favorites in the first, too.

Despite all that, there are plenty of things I did like about The White Rose. To me, it moved a lot faster than the first book. I got a lot of answers in this sequel, and even some history on the characters. There is also a lot more magic, which sort of lacked in the first. I think this is the reason why I as able to enjoy it and finish reading it. I have hope that the third book is going to be ten times better than this one, and maybe Ash and Violet's romance will really blossom. I plan on finishing the series since I do like Amy Ewing's writing style.

Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that’s how I know everyone still remembers everything—how I destroyed my relationship with Patrick the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. How I wrecked their whole family. Now I’m serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just ninety-nine days till I can leave for college, and be done.

Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn’t finished. I’m expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it’s just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. “For what it’s worth, Molly Barlow,” he says, “I’m really glad you’re back.”

Day 12: Gabe got me to come to this party, and I’m actually having fun. I think he’s about to kiss me—and that’s when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who’s supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who’s never going to forgive me.

Read-Along & Giveaway: The Perfectionist by Sara Shepard

HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO SARA SHEPARD!
THE PERFECTIONIST IS OUT IN BOOKSTORES TODAY!

Hey GCReaders!

Today we share our very first read-along on Good Choice Reading. This is my first time participating in one, and I have to say that I am pretty excited about it, and happy that HarperTeen & Me, My Shelf and I asked to be a part of this event.

HarperTeen is also offering an amazing giveaway for our GCReaders. The giveaway will run all month long with plenty of chances to win!

ABOUT THE BOOK

In Beacon Heights, Washington, five girls—Ava, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Julie, and Parker—know that you don’t have to be good to be perfect. At first the girls think they have nothing in common, until they realize that they all hate Nolan Hotchkiss, who’s done terrible things to each of them. They come up with the perfect way to kill him—a hypothetical murder, of course. It’s just a joke...until Nolan turns up dead, in exactly the way they planned. Only, they didn’t do it. And unless they find the real killer, their perfect lives will come crashing down around them.

From Sara Shepard, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Pretty Little Liars series, comes another story of dark secrets, shocking twists, and what happens when five beautiful girls will do anything to hide the ugly truth.

Here are my thoughts on the Prologue through Chapter Nine....

Let me start with that this is my first book by Sara Shepard. I  know, I know, where have I been? I wasn't a big contemporary reader. It wasn't until about a year ago that I really got into the genre. Of course now I can't get enough.

One thing that really sticks out to me most is how easy the writing seems. Not only did Shepard do a great job jumping right into the story, but also introducing each character, and giving just enough information for you to prepare for what is to come.

Normally I don't like books with too many main characters in the spotlight, but I think because the book is written in third person it's a lot easier for me to follow. Each chapter features one of the girls, and takes you into their history with Nolan Hotchkiss. He is one bad boy... tsk, tsk, tsk. Or should I say was one bad boy? He hurt a lot of people and it's pretty sad what some of these girls have gone through. So far I really like all five girls. They each have a unique voice and don't all blend together.

In the little I've read there is plenty of mystery, and the girls have definitely found themselves in a tough spot. They don't know whether to speak up and share the truth, since technically they didn't kill Nolan, or just wait and see how it all plays out? It's an interesting read so far, and I cannot wait to dive right back into it!

I hope you stop by next week and join us again for the next couple of chapters! Things are getting good!

FORBIDDEN by Kimberly Griffiths Little - Mini Review, Book Trailer & Giveaway!

On November 4th, HarperCollins unveils Forbidden, a seductive YA debut from award-winning middle grade author Kimberley Griffiths Little. Forbidden transports readers back in time to the deadly deserts and sweltering heat of Ancient Mesopotamia for a tale of danger, duty, and forbidden love. Jayden is on the brink of womanhood and betrothed to her tribe’s prince, cold-hearted Horeb. But when tragedy strikes, Jayden meets Kadesh, a mysterious visitor from the south who makes Jayden doubt everything she knows. Torn between loyalty to her tribe and the chance to escape her fate, Jayden must make a choice that will change her life forever.

About Forbidden:

In the unforgiving Mesopotamian desert where Jayden’s tribe lives, betrothal celebrations abound, and tonight it is Jayden’s turn to be honored. But while this union with Horeb, the son of her tribe’s leader, will bring a life of riches and restore her family’s position within the tribe, it will come at the price of Jayden’s heart.

Then a shadowy boy from the Southern Lands appears. Handsome and mysterious, Kadesh fills Jayden’s heart with a passion she never knew possible. But with Horeb’s increasingly violent threats haunting Jayden’s every move, she knows she must find a way to escape—or die trying.

With a forbidden romance blossoming in her heart and her family’s survival on the line, Jayden must embark on a deadly journey to save the ones she loves—and find a true love for herself.

Set against the brilliant backdrop of the sprawling desert, the story of Jayden and Kadesh will leave readers absolutely breathless as they defy the odds and risk it all to be together.

Today, we are unveiling the Forbidden trailer for the very first time!

My Thoughts & Mini Review...

I loved the trailer! I think it fits the story perfectly!

I read FORBIDDEN a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it a lot! I haven’t read anything like it. The world building was great, as well as character development. I wasn’t too big on the romance at first, and I wasn’t sure where things were leading, but I quickly fell in love right alongside Jayden.

There are plenty of surprises, and action packed moments to keep you turning the pages. FORBIDDEN took me by surprise to be completely honest. I loved the cover, and decided to read it based on that (I don’t deny I am a cover junkie), but what I ended up getting was way more than just a gorgeous cover. Little takes you on an adventure of forbidden romance, betrayal, survival, and beauty. It’s a MUST-READ!

About Kimberley:

Award-winning author Kimberley Griffiths Little was born in San Francisco, but now lives in New Mexico on the banks of the Rio Grande with her husband and their three sons. Her middle-grade novels, When the Butterflies Came, The Last Snake Runner, The Healing Spell, and Circle of Secrets, have been praised as “fast-paced and dramatic,” with “beautifully realized settings.” Kimberley adores anything old and musty with a secret story to tell. She’s stayed in the haunted tower room at Borthwick Castle in Scotland; sailed the Seine in Paris; ridden a camel in Petra, Jordan; shopped the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul; and spent the night in an old Communist hotel in Bulgaria.
